Did the show only work as a midseason replacement?

Rather than tracing the show's decline to the B-movie plots of Season 3, the departure of John Rhys-Davies, or the Sci-Fi Channel picking up the show, was the real mistake to give Sliders a full season for Season 3? Maybe if the show had just remained a midseason replacement, they wouldn't have ran out of ideas so quickly and there would have been more anticipation for its return. Everyone seems to like the first two seasons, when the show was only a midseason replacement. Maybe the show could've just aired when X-Files was on a break or something.

This particular episode is so hard to watch and I love zombies.it's right after John Rhys Davies departure , which sucked bad. We have to see Wade deal with the loss both personally and professionally; add to it Maggie's horrid character and how she acts toward Wade is too harsh for someone who just joined a group of people who've been together for 2years. Maggie is a class A bi**h! And, what the heck is wrong with Quinn. I never understood why Wade and Quinn couldn't be together. JMO

Actually, as we've learned from various interviews with Tracy Tormé and others over the years, the producers had an incredible number of interesting ideas and concepts that the FOX Network executives refused to let them implement, once the show was renewed for a second season.

From Nicholas Lea's character (Ryan) staying on for at least half-a-dozen episodes in Season 2 (where "something shocking" was going to happen to him, according to Tormé) to a parallel running-subplot involving the Earth Prime FBI agents seen in "Summer of Love" trying to track down Quinn's group from the other end of the multiverse (with Bennish's help), Tormé and Weiss had a ton of incredible concepts that got flushed straight down the toilet, thanks to meddlesome network execs seeking to impose their egos and signature onto the show.

I remember especially in the first season you would often see the same people such as wades boss (Actor Gary Jones) often reappearing in computer sales roles like on EP or as a soldier in the British USA Episode which I always thought was a nice touch as it wasn't just an actor getting work but the same person just different Earths but sadly that quickly went :-(

sliders worked so well as Alternate History what if stories to social commentary plots, instead it devolved into movie rip offs.
