Evangelion and Shintosim

Spoiler Warning!!!

Also an "I myself am new to Evangleion Fandom" warning.

Neon Genesis Evangelion, or as I like to affectionately call it "The Anime that has the Staypuff Marshmallowman nailed to a Giant Cross", is an Anime known for it's use of Judeo-Christian imagery, not in a strictly Biblical sense but in a sense filtered by Kabbalah, Gnosticism, Jungian psychology, and general Anime weirdness. And endless debates on if that imagery means anything, I think it does, but I think the meanings are layered.

Rarely is the subject of Shintoism, the native "religion" of Japan possibly being an influence brought up. None of the names come from Shintoism, but we in the West often explore Christian themes in fiction that replaces all the names with more exotic sounding ones, from Tolkien to Lewis. But even also sometimes in more contemporary settings, Shakespeare had to get around the Law itself not allowing him to depict The Bible directly.

Maybe I'm able to notice this because I had already noticed just from studying the use of Mythology in Final Fantasy games how easy it can be to construct parallels between Shinto cosmology and Gnosticism. Like comparing the Hitorigami and/or the "Seven Divine Generations" to the Gnostic Aeons.

The gist comes down to suggesting that the being SEELE calls "Lilith" is really Izanami and the being called "Adam" is really Izanagi. For starters independent of bringing NGE into it those two can be viewed as the Adam and Eve figures of Shintoism. Their names essentially mean Male and Female, and they are essentially the ancestors of all of Japan, human and Kami alike.

Izanami is currently supposed to be trapped in the Underworld unable to leave, not unlike Persephone or Eurydice from Greek Mythology. In Evangelion "Lilith" (If you're reading this even though your not familiar with NGE, Lilith is the Staypuff Marshmellowman I refereed to above, though it was originally misidentified as Adam) is being held by NERV literally underground. If I've followed the geography correctly, NERVE headquarters is a Huge Pyramid built beneath New Tokyo-3, and where Lilith is being held is in a basement deep beneath that.

Maybe none of that means anything. But it's interesting to think about.

Isn't there some way to read Rei and Kaworu's names as some kind of pun on Inazami and Inazagi?

I don't really know anything about Shintoism, but I recall reading something about this on some corner of the internet.

I hadn't heard of that, but it sounds interesting.

So I found the old post from some dude describing it. It turned out to be a bit more obvious than I remembered.

Well... I mentioned Evangelion, earlier...
There are two major characters named "Ayanami Rei" and "Nagisa Kaoru", on that show. In the end, it turns out that they're actually two sources of life also referred to as "Lilith" and "Adam". Basically, Rei/Lilith is the mother of all mankind, and Kaoru/Adam... well, he infanted something else. And they have this giant spear-like tool called the Spear of Longinus (how subtle is that naming scheme?).

Now, check this out:
Ayanami / Izanami
Nagisa / Izanagi
The genders even fit.
And they had a spear, too: Amenonuboko.
MIND BLOWN, etc.

... And yet, I'm pretty sure that's a coincidence. I've read tons of guides, interviews, lexicons, etc about the series over the years, and that one simply never showed up.

I dunno if it really is a coincidence or not, but it is neat.

That is pretty cool, I'll mention it in an update to the original Blogpost later.

Well, Jewish mythos was pretty big in the series. They had a Sephriotic Tree in the intro, which is a representation of the aspects of God per Kabbalah, they used lots of crosses as images, I'm thinking they used any symbol that moved the story forward, which is not at all wrong. The general story in "End of Evangelion" came up to a merging of all of us at the top of the stupa in Nervana.

They kinda covered many bases.:)
