What happened to Walt?

You remember, the handsome young dude from the end of Season 4 who was one of Jimmy's normal nephews. So normal that he made "Richie Cunningham look like a crack smoking porn freak."
It seemed like they were building him up to be a potential love interest for Lisa. Then without explanation he was gone in Season 5, did it have to do with Phil Hartman's death?
They should have kept Walt around longer, it might have helped the show.

Really? I wasnt a Walt fan. I thought Lisa and Dave were fabulous (and hilarious) together

According to Paul Simms on the season five DVD commentary, Walt was never intended to stick around. He was just supposed to be a guest star for a few episodes.

He could have been mistaken when he said that (so much time had passed that maybe Paul forgot that Walt WAS intended to stick around) but I'll just go by what he says.

I always assumed that whatever plans they might have had for Walt were scrapped due to the death of Phil Hartman and the producers having to scramble to figure out what to do with the show afterwards. Walt was in quite a few episodes towards the end of the 4th season and I was expecting him to come back in season 5. Then again he might have just been another one of those ideas/characters that got introduced and then dropped with little explanation, like Andrea Plan B.

Walt was intended to be more of a reccuring character like Milo the janitor was and also a romantic rival for Bill and Dave, he was an intern of sorts but he really didnt do anything on the show except for flirt with Lisa, he doesnt do files or paperwork, he doesnt do on air or technical support, he doesnt get coffee or run errands, Walt was just there watching Lisa and flirting with her and bantering with Bill and Dave and occasionally with Joe, Beth and Matthew.

So logically the character was written off, not to mention that Walt died in Titanic and nobody cared but that was a parody thing, funny thing is that when you watch Bill Moves On you never notice that Walt was gone until somebody mentions that Walt was not around, you just assume that his internship was over or that he quit or was fired, he added almost nothing to the cast and was just a goof, the character could have been written in as a replacement for Catherine but it didnt work out that way.

In the commentaries, the cast basically say that Graham and Rowe were both brought in by the network because they thought the show needed spicing up with some very good-looking actors, and the cast thought, what are we looks-wise, chopped liver?

If you like Brad Rowe, watch Would I Lie To You (2002). It's a good movie. Rowe was funny, a la Walt, Samaire Armstrong (It's a Boy Girl Thing etc.) was funny, Susan Ward (The In Crowd etc.) was funny...

I wish they would have kept the Walt character around and left it at that instead of bringing in Jon Lovitz. I just feel like Walt had better chemistry with the cast than Lovitz ever did.
