Why was Nick not in the last series i loved him in the first series and it was great when he and Nora finally hooked up

As I mentioned in the post about Stupid Dave, NBC foolishly decided to "retool" the show yet again between the second and third seasons and they dumped most of the cast. Among the casualties was Nicky (Jonathan Penner), a loss that I never forgave NBC for. Since Nora and Nicky had a history, I think they wanted to give her a new love interest, which came in the form of Jake (Tom Verica). Horrible move.

What was so good about Nicky? I haven't seen this show in a while, but I remember liking Jake more.

Nicky was charming and funny and sexy and suited Nora well, had more chemistry
