Would you reccomend the Ben Stiller show?

I love Mr Show and I know that a lot of the people from the show worked on the Stiller show before this, so I was wondering if it is at all comparable to Mr. Show?

reply

From what I've seen of the Ben Stiller Show, Mr. Show far surpasses it in comic genius and depth.

Mr show is better, but the Ben Stiller show is very funny. Most of the sketches were written by David Cross, last I remember. I think he's in the very last sketch also.

reply

And Bob Odenkirk.

Mrs Show loves her some Bob O....allegedly.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

It's not as good as Mr. Show, and has really dated due to it's self-conscious early 1990s MTV style, but there's some great sketches that could have been on Mr. Show.

The Stiller show is great. And most of the sketches were not "written by David Cross". Cross didn't even join the show till towards the end. Bob wrote a ton of stuff and there is some great stuff like Manson, Kill Dough Shatchkey, etc.

If you like Mr Show you'll probably like Stiller, it's more of a parody show, but it's still very very funny.

Personally, I finally watched all of "The Ben Stiller" show just a week ago on DVD, and picked up the first season of "Mr. Show" within the same week. Although TBSS had a lot of great talent behind it and there were some funny parts, overall the laughs were kinda few and far between, whereas on the first episode of "Mr. Show," I found more ingenuity and laughs than all of the 13 or so episodes I'd seen of Stiller's show. It just hasn't dated very well IMHO.

the Stiller Show is definitely dated but you can still appreciate it.

the Dana Carvey Show is also worth watching if you liked the Stiller show. Bob Odenkirk wrote a few sketches and Dino was a writer on that show too.

Actually you should probably just buy all the DVD's for every show Dino ever wrote for.

Except for MadTV of course, he admits that he did it to feed his kid.

MadTV for a while was pretty good, when Sasso, Spears, Borstien (or whatever her name is) were on, towards the late 90's.

I'd say you should buy anything Bob worked on.

I thought the Stiller show was great myself, but I watched it when it was first on, too. Maybe it has aged to fresh viewers, but I still love it. It's certainly not as good as Mr Show, but not much is.

You think the Stiller show isn't good but recommend Tim and Eric? Takes all types I guess.

Bob has said he didn't like the Stiller shows format, which was mostly parody, which isn't his thing, but I've heard him say some very good things about the show, listen to the commentary on the DVD's.

Like I said, there is plenty of really good stuff on the Stiller show. It's not as good as Mr Show, but I'd certainly recommend it over Tim and Eric and the Dana Carvey Show.

I just watched all the Dana Carvey episodes on Youtube (hadn't seen them since it was first on) and it wasn't very good. It was like a more lowbrow version of SNL (which is saying something). Honestly it seemed to me like a "best of" Dana Carvey from SNL most of the time, with all the repeat characters and SNL guest stars.

It had it's funny moments, but it also had stuff in it that just wasn't funny at all, like say for instance, Clinton with utters.

That wasn't funny in the least. It might have shocked some housewives in Idaho in 1996, but it wasn't funny IMO and certainly comes off as cheap shock humor now.

The running gag of the two guys giving people money and then running off laughing wasn't funny either and I can't believe how many times they did it. Not funny the first time and certainly not funny the 5th.

Tim and Eric is just crap IMO. As much as I love Bob and David it's sad to see them doing crap like that.

BTW, why should I care if Zach Galifianakis likes Tim and Eric? I don't get why you would even mention him. I admit, I don't know much about the guy....but seriously, why do you mention him?

I agree with almost everything you said, and the guy mentioned Galifianakis just to name drop a comedian. You can tell because he used the 'you don't get it' argument.

I hate Tim and Eric. As far as I know Cross was only in two Tim and Eric skits, the porn one was *beep* awesome, just because it was the Cross man.

Zach Galifianakis is an incredible comedian, and is one of my favorites... But just because he likes Tim and Eric doesn't mean it's good. People love the American Office but I think it's complete sh*t.

As for the topic at hand, yes I would recommend the Ben Stiller Show. It has aged, but if you appreciate good humor you should like it. It's not Mr. Show, but it's good. Beverly Hills 902102402 is great, the Garden Equipment commercials, Advantage Agassi, the Eddie Munster Cape Fear skit, T.J. O'Pootertoots, Charles Manson, Kill Doug Szathkey, amongst others were awesome.

Sandwiches, tasty sandwiches!
