Behind the opening credits there's a nighttime aerial view of the city, and conspicuous in that is a row of lighted objects spanning a river. Does anyone know what they are? My wife thinks they look like toll booths for boats, which I find unlikely. To me they look like supports for a bridge under construction. Is there a Scot out there who can shed light on this?

An episode of Dr. Who answered this for me. Firstly, it's London, not Edinburgh, as I'd thought. Secondly, it's something called--if I remember correctly--the Thames Estuary Barrier.
It's nice when I can answer my own questions.

Thanks for the info. We have a small version of that where I live, with a big flapper valve which prevents a high tide from backing up into our little city.
Cheers!

That series of structures is the famous Thames Barrier.

London suffered thousands of flooding death casualties in numerous major events for centuries, until it was built.

Now, if there is a surge coming from the English channel toward London, the apparatus not visible underwater--but reaching the river floor--closes on all of them, forming a literal barrier between the flood waters and central London.

It's really interesting to take the boat from west of the barrier toward Greenwich, and you go right between two of them. They are very impressive up close.
