The Maxx was extremely ahead of it's time...

I was driving myself insane trying to remember what this show was called (along with other not-so-great shows like The Brothers Grunt). I'm pleasantly surprised that MTV actually has all of the episodes up! MTV, before the days of [adult swim]and FX, actually had some great animated programs. (Before MTV started to completely suck, of course.) It's too bad this show didn't come out a decade a so later when it could have been picked up by one of the aforementioned channels.

I also had been trying to remember for years what this show was. I always vaguely remembered some weird, adult cartoon that was on MTV years ago. I always remember the scene where the injured bunny rabbit gets beat to death and the little girl sees/hears it and I remember being really creeped out and disturbed by it and it has always stuck with me. But I could never remember the name of the show until I was watching the Daria DVD collection and there was a preview on there for it's DVD collection and I thought: That's it! That's the show!

It's hard to call The Maxx ahead of it's time when we have no animation like it now. Sure, there are movies similar somewhat, but that's it. I should also note that it's quite insulting to compare this to the total trash that is adult swim programming. It really is a shame that we don't have the intriguing stuff today that we got from MTV's Oddities and the HBO Spawn show.

Do you think Spawn, MTV Oddities, Cowboy Bebop, Aeon Flux and Maxx have more imagination than Adult Swim when it comes to adult animation shows?

reply

Yes, easily. Adult Swim needs to realize that being adult doesn't mean constantly trying to appeal to the hipster, stoner crowd or being just outright as vulgar as possible. And they've never learned, their shows seem to be getting worse. I'm not worried about anime, that's still a consistently good product. But the US airwaves seem to have hit a bit of a wall and things should be so much better in terms of quality and variety than they are.

What's wrong with being a stoner? tell me? have you ever smoked weed? i do.

Perhaps stoner was a bad choice of words, I'm well aware that there are plenty of weed smokers out there that don't fit the stereotypes. I think most would still get the point I was going for and I would like to keep on the topic of animation. If you really want to know I've never smoked anything ever, not even once. But I don't want to have a discussion about it, it's irrelevant to the conversation really.

So you seen the Spawn animated show? quite a good unique adult animated horror fantasy crime drama thriller eh with nice animation by Madhouse, good storytelling and the best comic adaptation this side of Batman TAS eh? and kind of like Clive Barker does CSI and Se7en eh?

And how about Aeon Flux? another good quality adult animated show but a sci-fi one in the tradition of Blade Runner, 1984 by George Orwell, Akira, The Fifth Element and Matrix with nice art style in realism, detail, complex stories, political agenda and all that.

What about Yoshiaka Kawajari and Katsuhiro Otomo's movies?

Like I said above, there were some great animated shows aimed at adults in the 90s that weren't just mindless nonsense. It doesn't seem like we have anything like them today in American animation. I hope to see a comeback at some point, but until then I'm happy with anime.

My knowledge of the work of both of them is limited. From my experience the latter has impressed my more, but I don't want to overspeak on things I'm not an expert in.

I am a fan of dark/gritty animation like Wizards, Heavy Metal, Fire and Ice, Ninja Scroll, Akira, Spawn, The Maxx, Ghost in the Shell, Aeon Flux, Dark Knight Returns, Fist of the north star, Wicked City, Princess Mononoke etc. and i love those kinds of animations.

How about a Robocop animated show? it can bring the dark/gritty and satire from the original masterpiece back. It can be a crime sci-fi police drama like NYPD Blue.

I don't have any direct preferences when it comes to animation, I try to watch as many varieties as I can. But my favorites tend to be those I get the most emotionally engaged in, the ones I can draw connections to, or those that get my mind going in a good way.

That's a great idea, though it doesn't have to necessarily be Robocop. Just the idea can work. Too bad it won't happen given current American animation trends.

Nothing is wrong with being a stoner it's just when you make that your whole identity and your only political goal it's just makes you really annoying and lame. It's like LGBTQ

Nailed it. Unfortunately, I think US channels in general don't seem to understand this when it comes to mature animation, not just Adult Swim. US channels think "adult" animation means as much sexual, violent, druggie, bathroomy, and just in general juvenile humor crammed in a thirty minute timespand. I've seen children's shows manage to be far more "adult" than most cartoons aimed at adults nowadays. I'm not saying hipster/stoner(I'll admit to be an occasional smoker myself)/raunchy doesn't have it's place in the world, but when are studios going to realize that us grown ups also appreciate a little more depth in our "cartoons"?
