DVD cut

2 things:

Why is the DVD in 8 parts, the original broadcast of 1995 was in 6, with much more varying lengths of episode.

Why is the DVD version of the "hanging scene" so butchered? Was it considered too much? When More4 re-broadcast the series last year (2007) as part of the Channel 4 at 25 season, it was left uncut!

Unfortunately, the hanging scene has been cut by the BBFC. They only asked for seven seconds but the distributor chose to make further cuts totalling 35 seconds. I am so pissed off with the British censors. It's an adult programme that won't be watched by children. Their excuse for cutting it is that it is an imitable technique. Imitable by who? If an adult is going to commit suicide then they will do it and it won't have anything to do with this DVD. They did the same with the "Ren and Stimpy" box set. I've tried letters and sending emails to the BBFC but they always ignore them. I'm sick of it! How do we make the BBFC sit up and take notice and start treating us like adults? I'm open to all suggestions. Letters, complaints, emails. Anything. Who's with me?

Bizzarly, the hanging scene is shown almost complete during the Alan Bleasdale interview on disk 4!

Re the DVD being in 8 parts:

As I recall, the first (and only?) repeat of the series on Channel 4, which was made a year or two after the initial broadcast, was split either into 8 episodes of 1 hour each including breaks or, and this is how I remember it, 4 episodes of 2 hours each, presumably because it made the programme much easier to fit into Channel 4's schedules than when it had the six episodes of varying lengths - and this rejigging seems to have been retained for the DVD release. It's a shame, as it makes the individual episodes less coherent, but even a bowdlerised DVD release is better than none at all, which is at least some consolation.

I haven't seen the DVD yet, but am shocked the hanging scene is cut so severely. It's a really powerful scene, pivotal to the whole story. What shame.
