Why did they change the format?

Does anyone know why they changed the look of the show from a film look, to a live-format look. I don't know if I'm using the correct terms but Does anyone know what I mean.

Dang..ITH started on them networks?? I think I ran into the show by time it was off the air & it was in syndication on Fox channel in 'bout late 90s or early '00s...

It was on NBC but it was cancelled the UPN picked up
