West Coast Story

Does anyone know why this episode (Series 1) has not been included in either the original video issue or the new DVD release?

I believe it was because of the use of West Side Story. I think this is the reason why it has taken so long for the series to be released on dvd- they must have just decided to release it without this episode because they couldn't get approval, or it would be too expensive.

Is it on the American DVD if I had known that it was not on the UK DVD I would have got the American DVD instead (If West coast story is on there)

I don't know. It isn't released in Region 1 for another month, but I doubt it would be any different. Have to wait and see.

When they released the show on video in the 90's West Coast Story wasn't on the video. I've always assumed that they couldn't get permission to use the West Side story elements on the video and it remained that way for the DVD. This happens a fair bit in Tv DVD releases. You'll find that songs played on set (ie during the action of the show) are changed because of rights issues.

Its being released in Region 4 soon and its not going to be on that either

Yup, that's why - they couldn't get the rights to the music. You are right about this happening alot. It also happened to "WKRP in Cincinnati" when it came out. Alot of the music had to be changed. What a drag!!

The episode has aired on BBC America when Hamish Macbeth was shown. Maybe if the show is repeated in the UK or elsewhere, the episode will be aired for you too. I just reviewed all my BBC America recordings and found a copy of West Coast Story there, so I might just do a home made dvd of the series 1 episodes including West Coast Story

I'd love to have a copy of this episode as well. It was one of my favorites from the series and I was so bummed that it wasn't included on the DVDs. I'd compensate. (pretty please)

I recently transfered this episode over from VHS to a DVDR.

Unfortunbately the picture quality of my original VHS dub wasn't perfect.

Oh well, at least I've got it for now....shame it couldn't be included on the officially released set.

I just purchased the entire series of Hamish Macbeth and am also terribly disappointed that "West Side Story" is not included. Is there any way I could impose on your generosity and request this episode from you? I would be more than happy to compensate you for time/materials.

I was so bummed when I found out this episode was not on the DVD! I do have it taped off BBCAmerica so I can at least watch it, but I was really looking forward to having the ENTIRE series on DVD. It's such a shame too because this is the episode that introduces one of my favorite recurring characters: Zoot! And it's so much fun when the gang is planning their revenge on that hypocrite bank manager. :-)
