Why the kilts? (Wee Jock's Lament)

In the espisode "Wee Jock's Lament", why are the "posse" wearing kilts? It was great for conjuring up images of Rob Roy trekking across the highlands, but is this something real-life Scotsmen would do when off in the wild hiking, hunting, or pursuing other activities of male bonding?

A true Scotsman will never pass up the opportunity to wear the kilt - some will wear it every day though that is getting rarer - weddings and funerals are also full of kilties ... and an increasing number of guys get the full kilt outfit (costing around £650 - £1000) for their 18th or 21st birthday!

True enough. There are even a few of us here in the states who, being of scots ancestry (Buchanan), have gone the full kilt kit route ourselves. Although it's a tad expensive, and I get strange looks every now and then, I rather like wearing mine.

I was rather disappointed that there were no kilts at this year's local high school prom. There's usually always one.

Scots will almost always wear their kilts on formal occasions and they are the tartan of their family clan. They are usually worn during Highland gatherings as well (games, events, erc.).

But as the other poster mentioned - weddings and funerals are the usual occasions. Any formal event will do. Scots love their kilts. Ladies love to see them to. Heh.

Take care,

Brewster 3 ~ You took the words right out of my mouth!! All that hitching-up of the kilt and adjusting and readjusting and those hairy legs!! Oh My!
I didn't understand why they wore the kilts, either -- but it did make me wish they'd wear them more often!
I LOVE THIS SERIES! Am now enjoying it thru Netflix and my next installment comes tomorrow! I wish Netflix were more like their commercials and when I get home from work tomorrow, there'd be The Doc sitting there on my couch, asking "Whair ya bein all th'dae, wooman?!?"

One thing about Duncan Duff-- He does have a wierd way of "bugging" his eyes when he wants to emphasize a point. Watch him closely in "The Good Thief" when he tells Hamish about Frankie's friend's secret. I hadn't noticed it before that episode but I did a few times after it.

Don't trouble yourself Doctor. I'm a celebrity -- I'll write my own prescription.

Hiking up and down hills was the original reason why kilts were worn. Anyone who's worn one while hiking can tell you it's much more comfortable than pants or even shorts.

I suppose ticks are not a problem in the Highlands...

Unless you are a complete t**t you wear a kilt on formal occasions (though some find it acceptable at sporting events) such as Highland Gatherings, Weddings etc. It actually started as a formal garment, briefly wasn't and then went back to being a formal garment, partly due to decent kilts being expensive.

Scotish-Americans, however, are always coming to Scotland and wearing kilts wandering around the place as "all true Scotsmen wear kilts" and looking daft.

I am also of the opinion that only those of actual Scots Gaelic ancestry should wear Highland Kilts and only with the tartan of their clan (as for me Clan Donald) though many take them as a national dress of Scotland and play at being Gaels even when they are from Berwickshire and have no Gaelic ancestry... but I am a traditionalist in this regard and also dislike the "Celtic" fad (which also ties disparate groups that never saw themselves as the same) together in a very fake and manufactured way.

OK, I am Scottish and:

I would. I hate them. I have never worn one and I never will.

weddings and funerals are also full of kilties

Unfortunately this is true and it's a phenomenon which has gained considerable popularity in the last 20 years. I hate it though.

Never heard of this.

some will wear it every day though that is getting rarer

I have never known of anyone who wears them outside of formal occasions or patriotic events, let alone wear them every day.

Since you are Sottish i will defer to your expertise, but as an American woman I must tell you that there is not much that is hotter than a man in a kilt. I go all weak in the knees.

Yum.

reply

100% correct on all counts.

As a woman (not Scottish), I think kilts look wonderful. I also love bagpipes.
