Alex or Isobel?

I think we all know how it turns out, but who were you all rooting for? I really don't like either of them. Isobel seems really bitchy all the time! Then again I'm only halfway through season 2.

In the review I read, it describes Isobel as plain. Sorry but IMO she's far more attractive than Alex, Plus she's though and intelligent.
No contest.

I wouldn't say she's more attractive than Alex, but she's far from plain. Alex is more cosmopolitan in her manner and bearing, and she's a classic beauty. Isobel is definitely classic highland scot, and her's is a more natural, earthy beauty. The thing is that Hamish has always been captivated by Alex's charm and beauty, but she's never loved him enough to sacrifice for him, she wants him on her terms and only when it suits her. Isobel, on the other hand, has always loved Hamish, and always been jealous of Alex's hold over him. She's the one who's constantly willing to sacrifice for a chance at love with him, and his blindness to that fact is what makes her so bitchy. Personally, I liked Isobel more from the first time I saw her - and after the series 1 finale I thought he was a pig headed moron for not staying with her.

SPOILER ALERT

I loved the somewhat surreal ending to the show in Series 3, when Hamish and Isobel finally do get together in a cave up in the mountains, and they consumate their love while a blizard rages outside, it was rather symbolic of their relationship and (probably) their future lives together. Also, Hamish get's a great line off after they finish having sex, something to the effect of "...and to think we could have been doing that all this time."

reply

I totally agree with you, modean. And you hit the nail on the head about why Isobel is so bitchy! LOL And who can blame her? Hamish (dear man that he is!) was too chicken to tell Alex how he really felt and it ended badly for both of them....Alex dead because she came back to Lochdubh and Hamish miserable, guilt-ridden and suicidal. :( God, I love this program!

Why on earth would Alex have left in the first place? She can write her novels anywhere. As a HUGE bonus she'd have Hamish MacBeth in her bed every night!!!

If she'd had her priorities straight, she'd never had left Hamish in the first place.

still her death was very sad and I felt for her.

reply

Is it a bad thing if I say neither? Alex was a total flake and Isobel just never really appealed to me. I wanted her and Macbeth to get together just because that is obviously where they were going with it but if I am to be totally honest, I couldn't have cared less. I find that I was not invested in the women he chose. I love Hamish though and I wish they had chosen a more dynamic woman to play his love interest.

reply

i hated Alex, i thought she was a total cow who left the area to find indemendence, though it was funded by her daddy! treated Hamish like crap and still expected him to wait for her. Isobel was loverly, and though occasioanly stuck up still treated hamish with respect.

I wanted Hamish to be with Isobel and was very happy when it finally happened that way. I especially liked the part on the very final episode where TV John's daddy came back from the dead (as The newly deceased TV John was too "new" of an angel to come back himself) and revealed that Hamish and Isobel would need thousands of Pampers as they would presumably be having a large family. Based on that assumption, it was eay to go one step furthur and imagine them living "happily ever after" (with TV John no doubt a frequent otherwordly visitor!)

What a show!

The chemistry between Macbeth and Isobel was unparalleled. Their first kiss in S2E4, was very romantic and Carlyle played it perfectly.

I like Isobel a lot more than Alex. I'm watching "Isobel Pulls it Off" and there was no excuse for how Alex treated Isobel when she stopped in to ask the favor. I just wanted to smack her one when she tried to tell Isobel that this was her home. No it's not. It's a police station that you just happen to live at.

And it really pissed me off when Hamish walked in and stood there like he was whipped. It felt almost OOC for him given how completely overprotective he is of Isobel several times beforehand. But then I remember it's Alex and how she's always wanting a relationship with him when SHE Wants it and he just takes it.

I completely agree! :-)

I grew tired of Alex almost immediately. I wish they had killed off her character sooner. She was a drag on the series, imo. I didn't mind that there was a love rival for hamish's affection, but I thought she was just an annoying character that brought nothing to the series.

I felt bad a few years later when I saw that actress in another program; it took me a while to warm up to her character because I was hesitant to like her (because of Alex!).

(Interesting that there are no posts defending Alex, lol.)

LOL, I was watching (and being majorly disappointed by) the first episode of the second season and when Alex was talking about how she had to deal with that reverand calling her names every morning I couldn't help but think to myself "Oh well, he can't be all THAT bad then, now can he?"

And I'm probably heartless (and by probably I mean definately) but I didn't even feel sorry for her when she died. I mean if you're going to drive a giant bus in the dead of night in the rain up a narrow path uphill then you...get what's coming to you. It wouldn't have been that hard to take the book to the old couple and read it to them there.

But since Alex wants it to be all about her and make things impossible...

I think they might be into a threesome if they could take dildo's and rough up the other until they bleed.

For me, it's all about who like me more, you have to face it that Alex is the one concerned about losing her career and boyfriend, whereas Isobel is very likely trying to become as successful professionally as Alex. So let's say you only see each other for half an hour a day but she brings you a beer or whatever, snuggles and makes you feel warm down below, that's all that matters..... as well as paying her half of the bills and staying away from MY MONEY, WITHOUT MY PERMISSION.

Now let's beat up that OLD Basterd George Carlin, he'd appreciate it!

Well, here's one ;)

Imo she was more attractive than Isobel (with gorgeous hair!), and I felt really bad about her death and how she was treated after she was killed off, everyone just seemed to more or less forget about her after she died, even her father! What a horrible way to treat a character.

Also it was strange how Hamish used to dream about her (in season 1) but then became so cold and uncaring towards her after he finally got her...

reply

I've just finished season 2, which means that I might change my mind, but so far I'm actually not rooting much for neither Alex nor Isobel.

Alex was selfish. She had no problem leaving Hamish for her career, and she only wanted to be with him on her terms, and when it was convenient for her. Although I understand why she was devastated when she found out that Hamish didn't love her anymore the way he used to, I actually think that she somehow got what she deserved. And I think that it was a good thing for Hamish to grow out of his infatuation for her.

Isobel is sweet, and there is no doubt she loves Hamish more than Alex does, however for some reason I still find it hard to root for her. I think it might be a chemistry thing.

But I guess - considering only who is best for Hamish - she is the best choice of the two anyway.

I'm listening to the audio books as well as watching the TV.The audios are REALLY entertaining as is gangly MacBeth and his lazy ways.He is never going to get off with Isobel,Elspeth or the school teacher. But he DOES love "Lugs",his dog.A student of nature, born on the wildside,Hamish nuts out who his villains are-despite his persecutory bosses! He can navigate Lochdubh with his eyes closed and for him,the place has all the needs of a bloke. The TV series is derailed by REALLY bizarre events-absurd things.Ones that cut across stories and make them simply WEIRD.None the less, the scenery is grand and it helps if one has been and seen the place.:-)
I think Hamish needs a good macho police lady.....not one of the two "school-girls" on offer.

I detest Alex. She's smug and condescending, and I cheered when she was killed. I've always loved Shirley Henderson, especially in Shakespeare Retold.

I think I'll have a large order of prognosis negative.
