Would you believe... Max as Chief?

While Don Adams is always good as Maxwell Smart, I find it a tad unrealistic that a bumbler like Max, who caused his Chief no end of annoyance, would have been promoted to Chief of an international spy organisation, answerable to the President. It just seems a stretch that Max would be considered for the job, considering his bumbling. What do you think?

Really? is it that hard to believe? Think about this, George W. Bush was president of the United States. Now does that make it easier to believe.

You'd believe more in a series where a Chief was younger then Max and Max was still an active Control agent at 70ish?

reply

Actually,Max had already been Chief in the original series, when The Chief got kidnapped in A Spy For A Spy. To me,the original series seem to imply Max was a high ranking member of Control in spite of his clumsiness and Attention Deficit Disorder.99 complemented his weaknesses and that's why she was usually paired with him. I found his promotion to Chief almost inevitable in the new series and quite creditable as a seasoned experienced spy. I'm sure if this series had been given a chance it would have evolved into a worthwhile successor. I thought they had a good ensemble cast that WAS being fleshed as it progressed. Don Adams tried for years to bring it back. I still have a promotional artical that claimed the movie Get Smart Again was intended as a pilot for a series of TV movies. Remember - in Man From Uncle ,the boss in that series was in his seventies

Remember, things always turned out for Max. To an outsider looking in it would seem he was a great agent. Only 99 and the chief knew the score
