Miaka's bubble gum scene

I saw this on YouTube when watching Fushigi Yugi when Miaka and the dark green colored man were captured, and Miaka entertains herself by chewing some bubble gum until one of the guards noticed her. He demanded her to know what she has in her mouth, and then told her to show what she has in her mouth. She said what a pain it is to chew, and then...she blew a bubble! This scares off the guard as she blew the bubble bigger until it pops. What's up with this scene?

That was from episode two. Miaka and the "green haired boy" ( Tamahome) were captured by the emperor's guards and locked up. Her chewing the gum was also helped the two of them get out of captivity.

She was hungry (again) so she ate some gum. When the gaurd saw her he told her to show him what it was. when she did it burst over her face making her look a little like a ghost (remember the gaurd had never sceen gum before) so he fled and droped the keys adding there escape.
