Why Did They Share A Room?

They had a spare room so why did Ted and Dougal share a bedroom? I don't get why they wouldn't have separate rooms when there was another room to use.

Several reasons, I think... 1.- The writers needed an excuse for the characters to be able to talk and comment what had happened during the day, or make plans. 2.- Dougal would have been terrified to sleep alone if he'd been watching a horror film on tv. 3.- They needed the spare room for guests who often stayed -Bishop Brennan, Father Hernández, Sister Assumpta, Sister Monica, Polly Clarke...- (although the house, from the outside, looks big enough for many more rooms, ha, ha!) 4.- Nothing really makes sense in the Father Ted world, so we cannot ask for logic, ha, ha, ha...! I have to say that the "bed" scenes are my favourites. :-)

It was a little bit contrived but there were countless classic scenes that wouldn't have been possible if they didn't share a room. But Dougal possibly afraid of the dark is a good idea.

It's in the same comedy tradtion as Morecambe and Wise sleeping in the same bed.

I was going to mention Morecambe and Wise, and Laurel and Hardy too. I think it was a nod to them. Also, I think it was a case of "What are you going to do about it? It's Father Ted world!"

A lot of the humour in Ted derives from Ted and Dougal as naughty schoolboys in the bodies of adult priests (horrible image, I know, sorry). So the conversations they have (Dougal reading a comic or football mag in his Ireland top, Ted with his lofty ambitions and great plans doomed to failure, the slightly older and brighter schoolboy) are like conversations between teenage boys rather than what I imagine priests actually talk about!

Often Ted is in trouble, worrying and fretting about a fix he has got himself into - just like a teenage boy - with Dougal trying to be helpful but just getting on Ted's nerves.

Awight we're The Daamned we're a punk baand and this is called Carn't Be Appy T'day!

Its also the basis of quite a few funny lines and scenes. Like when Father Cagney asks what ted means when he tells Dougal that he will "be up in a minute" and Ted innocently and perfectly correctly tells him "we sleep together"

Because that's just what they do...sleep

"What....The Curtains?"

For comedic value.
