American version of Ab Fab

while I love this show, it is a completely taken from the British show Ab Fab.

Agreed. Back in the day I was hoping for an American version of it, then I started watching "Cybill" and saw the similarities. Jennifer Saunders herself said she loved Christine Baranski and her character.

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked.

Agreed, clearly so. I've submitted a "Movie connections" item, we'll see if IMDB accepts it.

it is a bit like ab Fab, though cybill and Maryanne are not nearly as crazy and self absorbed as Edina and Patsy.

As a big fan of both, it actually took me a long time to put two and two together, but yeah, this definitely had strong echoes of "Ab Fab."

- Cybill and Maryann's friendship dynamics are similar to Eddy and Patsy's (Cybill being the more rambunctious, slapstick one who gets into/causes awkward or silly situations; Maryann being the chic, hard-drinking, sarcastic one who's along for the ride)
- Cybill's never ending quest to sustain her acting career is vaguely similar to Eddy's ongoing issues with keeping her PR company afloat, and both professions led to several celebrity cameos/guest roles
- Zoe is kind of similar to Saffy in the sense that they're total opposites of their mother and serve as a constant antagonist, only in Cybill's case, Zoe was more of a typical rebellious teen, whereas on "Ab Fab" the joke was that Eddy disapproves of Saffy because she's so sensible and straight-laced
- Cybill and Eddy both have two kids, and live with one of them
- Cybill and Eddy both have two ex-husbands, who each fathered one of her children, and despite being divorced frequently come back into her life

I belive there were a couple of attempts to make a US version of "Ab Fab", including one direct adaptation a few years ago that only made it to pilot stage. "Cybill" kind of took the formula and put a different spin on it.

"Sweetie, go get mommy's bazooka."

I was just thinking that last night when watching for the '2nd loop' around this batch of re-runs! Writing is very good, and held up very well, thanks to the great writing, and the great cast!
