'Friends' Ripoff

I think why CBS canceled the show because Friends was out and people thought that CPW was too much like Friends.

It just had it's own story. That's why I liked it so much. It was original and never boring...
Friends are show for itself. It's comedy at first and this is drama. And they are many other things they are no-like...

The only similarity to Friends is that both shows take place in New York. Nothing else is even remotely similar. And at least CPW was shot on location.

Right, "CPW" was an adult drama, back when CBS was the last remaining network to consider grown-ups a desirable demographic. All that has changed now.

Besides, wasn't "Friends" a "Seinfeld" ripoff?

No.

CPW was cancelled for several reasons (several of which were CBS' own fault):

1) The show was scheduled in the same timeslot(s) as Melrose Place and Beverly Hills 90210. In fact, it's first two episodes were scheduled against anniversary episodes of those two shows.
2) CBS spent somewhere in the neighbourhood of $13-15 million dollars (minimum) on the first season alone - and that's not counting advertising. Even if the show had succeeded, they would have had to severely scale it back from its original costs.
3) At the time of its first season, Friends was getting beaten in the ratings by Due South. CPW was getting trounced by reruns of Party of Five (which was being shown on Fox after 90210 finished its season). The only difference is that NBC had the confidence to stick with their show because they thought it would be a moneymaker. Fox didn't.

You're talking out of your ass. Friends was nr. 8 of top-rated tv shows of the 1994–95 season. Due South was nr. 58.
