what was his part

NBC, when they had all their successful Thursday night comedies together, all set in New York, used to do crossovers between their shows. These would have been between Caroline in the City, Mad About You, Friends, and Seinfeld (though Seinfeld never really took part, because the writers didn't want to).

In one such crossover, Caroline meets Chandler in the video store. Chandler flirts with her a little, till she notices the tape in his hand - of the adult variety - and he panics and flees. It was brief, less than a minute, but a funny bit nevertheless.

Other crossovers betwene the aforementioned shows include Kramer's apartment being sublet from Paul in Mad About You (Kramer turned up on that show, not vice versa), and Helen Hunt turned up in Friends and mistook Phoebe for Ursula (Phoebe's identical sister, who was a recurring character on Mad About You).

They also tried to do a crossover once whereby each show would take place in the middle of a New York blackout. Friends, Mad About You and Caroline in the City all did this. I can't remember the plots for the latter two shows, but in Friends (its seventh ever episode), Chandler gets stuck in an ATM vestibule with Jill Goodacre, and Rachel loses a cat (not hers) and meets Paulo.

Good episode.

Back then, Mad About You was the 8pm show to kick off their first "Must-See TV" season. In the episode "Pandora's Box" (ep 3-6) Ira got Paul and Jamie illegal cable, Paul felt guilty and called the guy to unhook them. The guy unhooked the all the illegal hookups and everyone hated them. Jamie tried to put it back and caused the building, then the whole city, to blackout, which affected Friends.

Caroline In The City was not part of the blackout crossover episodes as it didn't premiere until the Fall season of 1995 and the crossover episodes occured in the Fall of the 1994 season. The blackout crossover episodes took place on Mad About You at 8pm, Friends at 8:30pm and Madman of The People at 9:30pm and aired Thursday, November 3, 1994. As far as I know Seinfeld was not part of the crossover episodes.

Just a note of interest: There was an episode of Caroline In The City where Caroline discovers that she has been getting illegal free cable for years, which puts her in a moral spin, since the rest of the building is hooked into her outlet. She tells the cable company and the whole building hates her for it...This episode aired during Season 3 on October 13, 1997 and is very similar to the plotline of the Mad About You episode, minus the blackout, that aired 3 years prior.

ER also took part in the Blackout crossover on that Thursday night (at the 10pm slot), as well as crossing over with Friends in the same episode where Mad About You crosses over.

reply

How the check did that work out given that the setting for ER was Chicago?

reply

I don't know about the blackout but Friends and ER never had an actual cross-over episode. George Clooney and Noah Wyle from ER appeared in an episode in the 1st season of Friends as doctors but their characters weren't the same as their ER characters.

One thing I don't understand: Caroline in the City aired on NBC, but why can I now watch it on CBS's online app? I find that a little weird!

less than a minute?

it's 1:40 minutes long... and he even has dialogue!

you might also be interested to know that caroline appears in an episode of friends series 2 where chandler and joey leave baby ben on the bus. they tell her to smell his head and she says "I think my uterus just skipped a beat!" always makes me cringe, that line.

reply

Is that really Caroline in that episode? I was never sure if it was her or just Lea Thompson. I didn't know all this about the crossovers and the blackout, so I guess it's more likely than I realized.

TO ANSWER your question (as NO-ONE did) Chandler Bing IS in episode 5 of Caroline in the City.
In the Episode Caroline's friend Annie goes to the video store and Chandler is in there and tries to pick her up by saying he's renting the movie 'The Piano'...it's a funny scene.

reply

the episode is titled: caroline and the folks in season 1 of the show

Am I right in thinking "Daphne & Niles from Fraser pop up i an episode, saying the cartoon strip drawn by Caroline wasn't funny that week ? and it had been written by the two blokes in her life ???? its a vague memmory I could be wrong

reply

Yes! Correct!
I think it's an episode where Dale writes the cartoon segment at Caroline's place.
Later, David Hyde Pierce showed up as another character.

reply

I believe Jonathan Silverman from The Single Guy showed up as his character during the first season as well.

reply

how does that work then, since fraiser was set in seattle?

reply

I think in the episode, Niles was in Seattle reading the newspaper and made the comment. He wasn't actually in NY with Caroline. Caroline's strip wasn't just published in NY.

reply

Yes- and I remember thinking at the time- that by that logic- Fraiser was a spinoff of Cheers and was in the same universe as Caroline in the City and Caroline in the City was in the same universe as Friends... does that mean that if the gang from Friends went to Boston they could hang out at Sam's bar from Cheers?

BOGGLES THE MIND.

One episode (1z21) Caroline goes into NBC and sees a poster of Mad About You. @_@

And what was with that episode of Seinfeld where George is forced by Susan, to watch Mad About You. It ends with them in bed together watching it.
