The bring back Bugs campaign

Come on, people, I can't be the only person. One more episode!!! We NEEEED (at least) one more episode to tie up the loose ends. They cannot leave all our favourite characters hanging like this!
Just imagine- a new episode. It is ten years on and Ros and Beckett have never been found...it would be good.
So...is it worth another petition? A flurry of letters to Carnival and/ or the BBC?
Who's with me???

I just read a fanfiction based on that idea - was that one of yours? It was really good.

I really want another episode now I've caught up with the show, just to tie up all those loose ends. I'd be up for writing a few letters. If they can bring back This Life they can bring back Bugs. Didn't it used to get like 10 million viewers in the first series? I know times have changed, but even Doctor Who doesn't get that many that consistently.

Have there been petitions before? Did the BBC ever reply to them??

reply

When Bugs first finished, all the Bugs fans who came online not knowing what to do with thmselves signed a petition, and I think one was sent to the BBC and one to Carnival. I don't think we ever got a reply, but I can't remember, and I didn't organise the petition.
No, I didn't write that fan-fic- where did you find it? Is it possible to let me know the link to where it is online? I@d be interested in reading it!

Me too!

It was on the Bureau 3 site, I think in the season five section. I'll try and find it again and give you the exact link. All the stories in that section were really good, actually, well worth reading when you've just finished watching the DVD and are dying to know what might have happened next!!

Okay, found it again after a bit of searching, the series five part of the site is http://website.lineone.net/~copper.fair/page4.html (don't know how to make links clickable, sorry!)

reply

Hooray! Nice to see the 'Bring Back BUGS' campaign in full swing. I have sent an e-mail asking the BBC for confirmation that they are planning a couple of new episodes and I'd recommend everyone do that if they can: just go to the BBC website and click on 'contact us'. It might be an idea to write to Carnival as well as I'm guessing they'd have to be involved!

Just finished watching the last episode of series four - they NEED a series five! I was 11 when it first started on BBC and loved it despite the sometimes far-fetched story lines.
If any links for petitions or email addresses could be provided i will add myself to the campaign!

Yeah, I was quite young too but I loved it. It really defined Saturday nights for me in the same way Doctor Who is doing now for younger kids (and lots of adults!!) I know audience figures dropped off towards the end, but I bet there's a whole generation who used to tune into the first couple of series and remember the show.

I was so excited when I got the DVDs, it really brought back some great memories. I'm surprised there aren't more fansites out there, there should be. This show deserves more attention, it deserves to be revived and it NEEDS a proper conclusion.

Let's get campaigning. Bring it back BBC!!

reply

I think 'BUGS' has the potential to be as big a success as the new 'Dr. Who' as it was a lot better than that in my opinion. It certainly needs a conclusion, and if enough people write, e-mail etc, the BBC, it will give them more incentive.
I watched the S4 DVD not remembering how it ended so when that final scene came on I was bowled over! It's a very sad ending isn't it.
There's no official petition, but perhaps we should start one? By the way there are quite a few fan sites, you just have to look for them - they aren't all easy to find!

Rob

reply

Tell me about it, when I started searching for BUGS sites about insects and software glitches kept coming up!!

I've done my part and sent off a couple of e-mails. I'll follow it up by letter as well I think. Not heard anything back yet though....

reply

I asked the BBC on their website about what Craig McLachlan told me and they claimed no knowledge of the project. However I suspect it is still in the very early stages and so BBC Information may not know about it, but perhaps Carnival have been making the moves - certainly if they're contacting the stars there must be a fair chance of doing it at some point. We should probably contact Carnival too.

Rob

reply

i should think craig wouldn't even bother telling fans about it if it wasn't a distinct possibility either.

reply

That's what I thought...and considering Craig left in series three, it's got to be a good omen that he's the one talking about new episodes. Maybe there's just plenty of money on the table to entice him back!!

I don't know about anyone else but I wouldn't be nearly as excited about the idea if it was Steven Houghton saying they might be making a new episode. Maybe they could give him a cameo as a bad guy who gets blown up in the first sixty seconds....

reply

Yes, I think it would be good to have Houghton in there, but maybe he could play a different character like he should have been allowed to do in S4. I don't think he'd want to be in it as a bad guy only to be killed! It would be good to see as many of the original actors as possible.
I also thought it was good to hear it from Craig (and completely unexpected; we thought he was going to tell us something about his time on the series!), as I'd have thought he was the least likely to return... By the way, has anyone contacted the BBC or Carnival recently about it?

Rob

reply

So how about such a campaign now? Any updtes on Craig's statement?

reply

I sent a message to Carnival last week, but I'm still waiting for the reply. I laid out all the evidence, and asked them point blank if it would be happening or not. I wonder if they'll bother to reply...

Hello, I have just receieved a reply from German TV channel Pro7 and they have told me that there is a 5th series that never ever has been aired anywhere!
So I bet that's what Greg's stament is based on.

I have also received a reply from Carnival Films stating that they don't plan to continue it. Of course they have not mentioned the fact that there is some 5th one they just never aired anywhere!

reply

i highly doubt there is a fifth season that no one has heard of and hasnt been aired, theres no reason for them not to have aired it

reply

As much as I'd like it to be true it's not. Of course if the BBC (or ITV, or Channel 4, or... well anyone really!), want to make it true I'd be very happy indeed. Season Five. We need it. Now.
(I've recently finished my own Season Five book where I wrote how I thought the series might have tied up the loose ends.)

Surely we should get BUGS back compain going again, loads of TV programmes have ended their run now on the BBC and they are now putting out rubbish, I'd rather see BUGS back now more than ever.

reply

I couldn't agree more. What TV needs right now is a new 'BUGS', but that's what I've thought for a decade. Sadly I think that it's less and less likely that a series of the 90s would come back, especially as it wasn't owned by the BBC, but merely commissioned by them from Carnival. If it had been the BBC's there would have been slightly more chance, I think.

Carnival continues to produce successful TV, but its output has changed quite a lot since the time of 'BUGS' and it tends to do more serious drama or at least, non-sci-fi/fantasy stuff, so they'd be unlikely to need to raid their own history while they're doing well with other projects.

A third option is often the creator or main contributor to a series, in this case Stephen Gallagher, who would bring back their work by popular demand. But the series wasn't Gallagher's own invention (he 'merely' contributed most of the defining stories, and most would agree, best episodes), and while he's justifiably proud of the work he did (and occasionally mentions it on his blog), it wasn't his series and he didn't create it and so would have no reason to spearhead a return.

I'm not trying to discourage you from contacting the relevant companies, but I think they just became irritated by it - they stopped replying to my questions years ago!

I know the feeling. I've occasionally got on at the BBC to release certain radio comedies on CD - in particular, series they started releasing and then stopped in the middle of. I think they're a bit fed up with me!
