Sympathy for Julius anyone?

I saw this film many times in the 90s but just having watched it recently nearly 20 years later, I see that Julius isn't entirely the snively, odious character that I remembered him as. He's flawed to be sure but I noticed a more gentle and caring side to him this last viewing. Any thoughts on this out there?

I agree. He tried

No. He might have not been a monster as he said but I couldn't stand him after he forced Nan to have sex with him and then continued to be a verbally abusive dick throughout the whole movie.

She also married him under false pretenses. He's a d-bag. Sorry.

He's privileged, elitist, out of touch, and clinging to a system that thrived on the misery and poverty of the lower class. I hated the way he thwarted his sister's romance with Mr. Wallace, saying she had a title, and money of her own, and her place was at home with her mother. He also refused to listen when his mother tried to make him understand that women have human feelings, unlike clocks.

My point is the gentleness and caring you refer to are useless without a raised consciousness.
