this show sucked

my friend and i rented the first disk of the season to get an didea of where the film came from and we both agree that the show made no sense what so ever. the plot line to the whole story is weak and there is no character development. My question is, what is the appeal of this show and why did they turn it into a film?

Because it didn't suck.

You are just too stupid to understand it.

reply

Since we are so "stupid" Please, explain to us why the show is good...

reply

What is there not to get about the real series? The shorts I would understand, but he was talking about the first disk which is the real episodes. Something can not suck if you do not get it.

reply

You didn't answer the question. What was so great about the show? I don't think you even know. Don't insult someone unless you can explain why they are stupid, idiot.

reply

it's hard to explain... you're not an idiot like the earlier people might suggest but it's one of those things you either get or don't.

reply

well I won't call you stupid but they are alot simpler than the weirdness might suggest.

UT or D

AEon heads out on an unknown mission. That one guy (I don't like this episode enough to know their names) assumes she is going to take trevor out of power and/or kill him. AEon betrays the guy. The guy revives the former ruler and finds out he's barmy and kills him. AEon frames the guy to keep trevor in power. All the weird stuff are modes for the character development. Only characters that matter are AEon and Trevor (and maybe that four arm girl from ether drift theory but whatever) so they are the only ones to get character development.

in order to do that I would need to summarize Nietzsche, Sartre, Baudrillard, Plath, Joyce, Kierkegaard, Heigel, Kant, Kafka, Camus, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Kundera, Marx, Bretch and maybe even a bit of Butler.

reply

Worse than Akira? You mean, the film that is widely considered the best anime ever made? Well, that's quite the charge (rolls eyes).

I understand that the show was very confusing. But I like the ideal of a perfect place. I like the ideal of how it was all put togather. Also the art work was the best part about it. It looked more real then most things you saw back in 1995. So I thought the show is amazing.

reply

Well the show was weird, and i think one of the most confusing things about it, at least as a first time viewer now in 2005 (and i saw the new movie before the series) is the lack on continuation between the episodes... well there's some, but barely any... it seems for like 10 22min shorts as opposed to a series... but i can see what they took from the series for the movie and i found the series delightfully chaotic and strange.... i'm not sure it's meant to make sense in the way that the poster of this topic wishes it to... because of this one may find Aeon Flux to be a crappy series but that is just a taste thing rather than stupidity.

reply

They turned it into a film because it has a cult following and adaptations of cult comic books and cartoons are very popular these days. The movie, the series DVDs and the video game are just pieces of a marketing scheme.

The appeal? Well, you like it or you don't, it's as simple as that. There is nothing "weak" in this show, it's meant to be like that. Why should the plot be consistent? Why should it need "character development"? There's no law in making a TV show.

You first should know that Peter Chung (the creator) was working on Rugrats before doing this show for MTV and Aeon was a result of his frustrations. He wanted to do f..ed up chit and he done it. And it appears that some people liked it and each one have their own reasons... but many would respond aggressively since you start the hole thing by saying that the show sucked. That's not very clever.

reply

To say that someone is stupid because they didn't like a show you like is stupid. But to say a show sucked and then ask what made it good is contradictory. I saw like one episode of Aeon Flux back when it ran on MTV (The Demiurge) didn't get it in the least but it seemed cool in a weird way. Just last week I rented the DVDs and watched them all. It's one of my favorite shows ever. To me, it's great because it's thought provoking. Each episode doesn't necessarily make sense on its own but while you're trying to understand it (if you really put some thought into it) you might make some sense out of real life. And the characters are well developed at least Aeon and Trevor are and they're really the only characters that are in more than one episode. It's just not presented and progressed in the usual way. I think the characters were revealed more in "A Last Time for Everything" than any other episode.

Hi,
Aeon Flux is a really good show with a good animation and good storyline. Swat Kats was another show with strong plot that I liked.

Remember, Please think before judging. Aeon Flux, Swat Kats, Jonny Quest Real Adventures, are masterpieces.

Mook Studios did an excellent animation job with all of these three shows.

I think Hanna Barbera Productions and Mook Studios are the best studios ever.

Aeon Flux had a plot? When did that happen. The episodes were just Aeon kicking ass to get into Bregna, finding Trevor doing something disturbing, and getting pouty because of it; Trevor would spout some philosophical idea, and then something weird would happen, the end.

If you think that sucks, then the show obviously is not for you. Go watch Family Guy.

I pretty much never post in the IMDB forums, but man, this description made me smile. I love this show, but as completely bizarre and byzantine it is, your desciption *SO* accurately sums up every...single...episode.

You can't buy it, you can't sell it. And you just don't get it.

Here's a hint... listen to the commentary... although they keep saying they will refrain from analyzing they give you big hints as to the meaning of those episodes.

That's funny... a lot of the fans didn't like the film so much, including myself, cuz the plot was too "normal." It was too linear, simple and sort of already done. Most of these plots (the episodes) are non traditional and remind me of Momento. Too bad they didn't do something like that. I really hated the costumes though, esp Pete and the Handlers. I hate the Handler's crimped 80's hair *shudder*. The acting was a bit cheesy. The only thing I really liked were the sets. And the Stuart Townsend cameo.

Yeah it's supposed to be that baroque grotesque style... sort of like Hayao Miyazaki. There's always some hideous granny-witch in a ton of his films. I got used to it though. I still think Trevor is ugly, but Aeon I think does have that exotic prettiness as some say. (I'm a girl by the way.) Interestin...

reply

Actually, I really liked the look of the film and the costumes. It's one of the things that I think they got right. I wanted the film to look a bit different from the animated series.

But the plot is where they really messed up. In and of itself, it was not that original. The minute I heard the film being referred to as a "love story," I knew they had messed up. Aeon and Trevor have more of a fascination and obsession with each other, rather than love. And the film never really shows WHY they love each other. They just do. It's silly. Although I did enjoy the picutre. It was basically catering to a mass audience. But it could have been so much more, especially since Karyn Kusama was directing. I have read about a director's cut existing, being nearly half an hour longer than the theatrical version. Now THAT I would like to see. I imagine it will be released at some point, just to make a few extra bucks :) Like a lot of director's cut releases nowadays.

I would have preferred to see the film be a series of shorts, presented in a non-linear fashion. Rather like the original Aeon Flux DVD that came out a few years ago, which crammed a bunch of the episodes and shorts together. And like Memento, which you mentioned. You're right, Aeon does have an inherent prettiness about her (I am a female as well).

reply

I remember seeing it when I was about 11 or 12 and it was like nothing I had ever seen before, it was like watching an action movie at 6pm when you were supposed to be watching scooby doo or something.

Personally I think it is genius, I can understand how if you saw the film first it would confuse you, the film was a bad idea from the word go and was destined to fail...

I always thought they were in love. But could never be together because they absolutely disgust each other.

The love thing to me, however, was just more atmosphere to them both being each other's "perfect foil". It's a dualism that would make lao tzu hard....
