At the end theres a checkpoint between Beijing and Hong Kong and needing special credentials to pass it, why is that?

Firstly, the checkpoint is between HK and Mainland China (not Beijing, since the two cities are not adjacent to each other).

In 1994, HK was still run by the UK and not by China, so it was really an international border.

Even today, however, there is still a border/checkpoint that requires a special pass. This helps prevent mass emigration of people from underprivileged parts of China to enter HK for its better standard of living. Recently there had been relaxed policies and increased allowance for tourists and some people of HK went absolute apesh!t because of it. So a border there will probably remain for decades at least.
