woman man ratio

Just gotten curious on some point. I saw this twice in the 90s and still think about it, and my wife and I are in the middle of watching it again (having stopped it halfway through).

As I thought about it, I was struck by the plot -- he has three gorgeous daughters, and he and they are worried about them finding husbands. I understand that two of them had previous relationships, but they seem to be taking about a decade to bounce back.

Of course this is a movie, so of course they are beautiful actresses -- even the schoolteacher and the fast food girl, both of whom are supposed to be considered 'plain' by the audience.

But this got me wondering about the real situation in Taiwan in 1994. Was there a shortage of men there?

Consider: In the film, there seems to be an endless ocean of males, a classroom full here, a hotel/restaurant kitchen full there, a volleyball court in another place. Consider: In the PRC the last few decades, there has been a real shortage of women, because of the anti-daughter/pro-son cultural bias that resulted in their current problem of finding wives for their young men.

I know Taiwan is not The Mainland.

In 1994, was there a problem of young beautiful women going without husbands?

No, there was not a shortage of men in Taiwan in 1994 or anytime for that matter.

Even of there was, women can easily obtain a man overseas - specifically in America. So if anything, there's a shortage of women in Taiwan and it's the men in Taiwan who are desperate. After all, what's the ratio between between White man-Chinese woman to that of Chinese-man-White woman when it comes to marriages and relationships? 10 to 1?

And if you go to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Taiwan
you will see that there's always more males than females.
