The Best Chinese Film

Yes it certainly is! It's such a shame that this film has only been, as far as I have found, released on inferior VCD quality. It screams to be sought out by Criterion to bring it's beauty to full DVD bloom.

I have to agree- this movie kicks ass. Jiang Wen is a great director... I can't say I am really impressed with most mainland Chinese directors (I really dislike Zhang Yimo), but I have yet to be dissapointed by Jiang.

If anyone hasn't seen "Guizi Lai Le!" ("Devils on the Doorstep"), it is also a really interesting movie... that's the one that got Jiang banned from directing in China for a few years.

No, it was OK like Shower OK, but there are plenty of better movies like Mountain patrol, Riding alone for thousands miles, Blind Shaft, Blind Mountain, Devils on the doorstep etc.
