Question about plot

I really enjoyed this movie, and was wondering if someones else who saw it could give me a little insight into a small part of the movie:
The town in Wyoming where everyone disappeared into thin air--what was that about? I can't think of how that fits into the plot at all.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If I rememeber correctly they never really got much into it other than they disappeared, but I thought that is where they got the little girl that had her speach center scrambled and then died in the hospital with Bree Walker. Correct me if I am wrong, but it seemed like perhaps they were abducted as a sample of humans for their own personal use since they were wiping the rest out anyway.

Thanks for your reply! I thought the same thing that you did, but when I thought about it further ( I have alot of time on my hands) it doesn't make sense. Because the whole idea of the movie was that the aliens were peaceful and friendly, and meant no harm to us, until we nuked them after the first "asteroids" hit. Humans were definately the bad guys here. So they wouldn't have abducted anyone. They only harmed us in retliation for harming them. Ugh. I just really would like a clear cut explanation to the disappearances. I think I'm overthinking again... I need a hobby : )

reply

It simply could be that all those people heard or saw the asteroid and decided to leave town and go somewhere else just to be safe, you know, like and evacuation. Just a thought

"Humans were definately the bad guys here."

Three multi-megatonne equivalent craters and kidnapping a whole town? I think your definition of "bad guys" needs some sort of revision.

As for the clear-cut explanation...there is none. Possibly an allusion to events in The Rapture, if you'd like to think biblically.

"They only harmed us in retliation for harming them."

Well, if you look at it..."they" harmed us first:

1. Three impacts, which caused:
2. Widespread fires near the impact zones.
3. Three (known) victims of third-degree burns, at least two of them died from their injuries.
4. Disruption of air-traffic
5. Damage to a hydroelectric dam in China, causing massive blackouts, and further injury.

Just on the top of my head.

You know. I agree with you. Why would aliens come to Earth in the form of asteroids? And why would they smash three asteroids into our planet as a "Hello we are on our way". These aliens must have never done much research about the planet Earth, and they certainly must have never had to deal with asteroid collisions on their own world...Otherwise they would realize how freaked out we would be. And even if we destroyed one of their asteroid-ships with cold-blooded murder in mind, would they really warrant the destruction of the entire planet?

Instead of the whole message of "The humans destroyed themselves" that the movie tries to portray. I like to think of it as these aliens were out to get us from the start and were just having a little fun before they blew us to bits.

Aliens are jerks. "Oh you don't like being hit by space rocks eh, then you have failed as a plant! You all must die! Sincerely your friendly, peace loving Rock Aliens"

reply

Abduction doesn't have to be harmful (at least not nearly as harmful as wanting to enslave/destroy us), and we don't know why they were visiting. Maybe to find out about us. And it makes sense that they'd take a sample with them.

Taking a single town as a sample seems pretty unintelligent though.

reply

Since the aliens remain a complete mystery, we'll never know. The aliens may have also nabbed a town in Asia and another in France.

I've got to admit, lobbing asteroids at a planet is a helluva weird way to say Hello. But what the heck, these are aliens.

This was a reference to the belief in some Christian sects called The Rapture. This is the belief that, just prior to Armageddon, true believers in Christ will physically vanish and go to Heaven, leaving the "unsaved" to their fate. The movie and book series Left Behind and the Mimi Rogers/David Duchovny film The Rapture also center around this premise.

Although I don't subscribe to this particular belief, I nonetheless found the inclusion of a rapture scenario one of the eeriest parts of the movie.

reply

I agree with this explanation. It was indeed stated that the town was deeply religious. That's how I remember it, anyway, and how I explained it to myself.
Note: I don't believe in this myself.

reply

If I remember correctly, wasn't the name of the town "Faith, Wyoming" or something like that. If someone here has the movie and could look, that would be swell.

Also, why in the world were the aliens travelling on Asteroids? And why were they bent out of shape for us nuking them? I would imagine that creatures capible of interstellar travel would realize that high-velocity rocks heading a barely space faring planet might make is a bit edgy.

And don't give me the whole 'they didn't know it would scare us so'. They knew enough to get the directions from voyager AND they knew the three nations with first strike nuclear capibility (China, Russia and the US). Sounds like they had reconned us pretty good.

The last time a big rock hit our planet, circa 70 million years ago, it wiped out every land animal with a mass of more than 40 lbs. With that in mind, I might be of a 'shoot-first-ask-questions-later' mentality.

Maybe their mode of transportation is by utilizing asteroids which are capable of travelling through space. They were aware of any damage that it could create which was why they aimed for non-populated areas to land. The people who got affected were unintentional targets.

Their sensors would have told them that if they had the capability to scan a planet.

But you are forgetting something. They did not shoot the asteroids that landed first. The movie never gave a logical explanation by the government on why would a natural asteroid would be making a radio signal broadcast that was interfering with the other signals. It may have been their signal of "we come in peace". They also tried to use the humans who were nearby the stones that were alive to pass the message.

So they could have done everything they were supposed to. Then when their big ship came to land, humans destroyed it at which point, we have declared war. Seriously, I don't understand why the government scientist guy kept saying it's a natural asteroid when it was making a radio signal that was broadcasted in many channels including human ears.

actually, somone somewhere mentioned it before... it's a biblical reference.

Supposedly, at the end of time, God will take all his true followers up into heaven to be with him (this is called "the rapture") and leave the non-followers to be judged by the white rider on the pale horse.

personally, i think the aliens abducted these people to act as almost a zoo exhibit: "come see the humans that we obliterated!"

but then again, we don't really know unless the writers tell us.
