Why does Richardson's character have an American accent?

Maybe I missed something because I didn't see the very beginning, but if Natasha Richardson's character is English, why does she have an American accent?

reply

She has an american accent because she was raised in Washington D.C.

reply

Exactly.
When she first meets Mia Farrow's character, the latter comments on her American accent, and it is then that she explains that her father had been an attaché at the British Embassy in Washington.

I was wondering about this too. Thanks for referencing it! I remember hearing those words, but I guess I wasn't paying complete attention to the discussion.

Having lived in Washington for 20 years and knowing more than a few people at the UK embassy, and their kids, I find the explanation above a little mystifying, because if anything, the British children I knew during that period maintained their accents with a vengeance and hated to be thought of as having adopted an American accent. They would rather have died! But it serves the movie's purpose well because we didn't have to listen to Ms. Richardson do a fake English accent! They also could have said she had been raised in Canada.

How could her English accent be "fake". She is English. Are you having a go at us?
