Halloween H20: 20 Years Later vs Wes Craven's New Nightmare

(This is a continuation of a contest that's started on the pages for the original films of both franchises)

With both franchises considered to be in decline, they both really needed something great to continue on. And so luckily, both became resurrected with franchise alumni intending to bring these two middling franchises to their former glory. Jamie Lee Curtis and Heather Langenkamp once again resume their roles as the leading heroines. While the circumstances of their presences are different (Heather playing a metafictional version of herself) both come to find out that they won't be escaping from their past with Michael and Freddy (in one form or another) that easily, and are forced into final confrontations to save themselves and their sons. (Though losing their respective love interests by the end) They both have fun paying homage to their father films throughout, and do so with great affection. Both were much more well received than most of their preceding sequels by critics and audiences. They didn't come without some backlash, and the group it came from was rather interesting. Many longtime fans not appreciating their apparent disregard for what came before and going in new directions. But whatever the case they are often considered two of the best installments of their respective franchises, and both should've been the fitting finale they deserved. Well this is the last round of this contest (A certain other installment of one of these franchises I, and many others choose, to pretend didn't happen will not be featured here), so which of these films do you prefer and why?

New Nightmare.
It's not even close.

H20 was horrible and offered nothing new.
Drag out the same old tired format and push the franchise further into the ground. Really, the best thing to happen to the Halloween franchise was Halloween III.
But of course doing something bold and new "scared" people and they just wanted Myers back doing the same old tired crap over and over...and here we are again 20 years later with Myers back doing the same old tired crap over and over.
JLC's character was not interesting enough to keep me entertained in the original, nevermind this time around.
The only thing I liked in H20 was the clever Psyhco reference and that was due to the fact it was multiple references all in one go.
Other than that, go watch the original Halloween. While I'm not it's biggest fan...it's FAR better then H20 was.

New Nightmare is such a clever film.
Yeah I know it got and still gets some stick as it's not bloody/gory and there are not many kills, etc. I feel this added to the film as it's not actaully a "Freddy film", it's more a film about the psychology of Freddy, and the effect (and after effects) this character can have.
People state Freddy was underused (without realizing what the film is actually about), I say Freddy was overused. I just wish Wes had bigger balls and did cut down Freddy more and instead foucs on Heather's "insanity".
A great piece of work that removes itself from the franchise, yet still works well as a direct sequel to the first.
A very cerebral film indeed.

I'd have to pick New Nightmare. Of course I'm a Freddy fan,
but it re-invented the Nightmare series bringing back it's
creator, Wes Craven, I like how Heather and the cast play
theirselves, the score is great plus Freddy was scary again.
H20 isn't bad, I like that Jamie Lee Curtis came back and
John Ottman's version of the classic theme. It just wasn't
the same without Donald Pleasence, the mask changes
and they show Michael's eyes too much.

I am not going to rip your opinion for thinking A New Nightmare was better! The best thing to happen to the Halloween series was Halloween 3! Are you serious? They decided that they were going to get rid of one of the greatest killers in film history and replace him with some morons trying to use Halloween masks to kill children!Talk about a stupid theme! The movie wasn't scary at all! They got rid of "Pure Evil" and replaced it with witchcraft! It was a terrible film with an even worse concept!
What was great about H2O is that it gets back to the original concept of Halloween. Also what is great about H2O is Laurie decides that she can no longer run from Michael, but instead has to stay behind and face him! For 20 years Michael was hunting her and she had finally had enough and decided to go after him! H2O was a really good film. Halloween 3 sucked!

New Nightmare is an amazing original brilliant film that I LOVE the same as the original. 2 great movies

I'm biased because I'm not so much into supernatural things, so I'm choosing H2O. That being said, I still love A Nightmare on Elm Street and Wes Craven's New Nightmare intensely.

New Nightmare is amazing, much better than H20.

I know H20 offers nothing new and parts of it are kinda boring (the scenes with Jodi Lynn O'Keefe and Adam Hann-Byrd), but I have great memories watching it when it came out. It was entertaining and it was nice how the brought back some of the original actors.

The fact in my opinion is that New Nightmare can actually compete with its original movie. H20 can't.

reply

They are both very good sequels but I have to go New Nightmare.

I agree that New Nightmare can compete with the original, I actually think I prefer it to the original.

Halloween H20.

New Nightmare was mostly just a gimmick with few kills (none interesting), very little Freddy and to much little brat.

At least Halloween H20 was a tad scary, New Nightmare wasn't in the slightest.

Halloween H20.

I'm a fan of Halloween and over all I prefer Michael over Freddy. But when it comes to these two movies, I'd have to give the edge to New Nightmare. It's simply more entertaining.

Wes Craven's New Nightmare, because is a clever twist in the narrative made by the franchise's creator.

Prostitute: What the *beep* are you doing?
Johnny: I'm gonna kill a bunch of people.
