It could have done with being 10 - 15 minutes longer.

The second half of the movie gets very patchy...
When I first watched I thought Robert Englund became Freddy, the last we see of him is being shocked by the outcome his own painting, then a little while later Langenkamp and Saxon actually have a scene where they become their characters.
Other people thought this too.
As it stands his plot thread disapears at the half way point, all we get is an answering machine letting us knkow he's not home.

They should have also expanded Wes Cravens decent into madness.

I understand both of these things were originally scripted and fleshed out plotlines but cut for various reasons, including a role for Englunds wife.
Why were they removed?

Yeah, and it could also have been 10-15 minutes better.
I had watched this a long time ago and I remember liking it then, but I just seen it recently and no, I don't think it was any good. Just as you said: plot dissapears halfway through.
At the same time human characters suddenly become actors from the past without any continuity. It just happens and we are suppose to accept it. I don't think the idea was bad but just badly exposed, as if they lacked funds and had to rush to the end.
But worst of all, acting wasn't even decent. For exemple, Nancy doesn't seems one bit sad when police come back home to give her the bad news. Of course, nobody knew that guy from before, he was just thrown in to establish she has a kid but come on, she could have at least try to make us believe she loved him a little.
Anyway, there was a lot of other stuff that didn't please me, but since I don't want to start nitpicking, I'll just say you're not the only one who wasn't entirely satisfied with it.
The first movie was great though.

It's a shame it just sort of disintergrates, becuase through all the problems the idea was really good and parts of it really worked.
An epilogue of them filming the opening would have been good... full circle.

Robert becoming Freddy or being attacked by Freddy would have actually made the movie good and apparently that's not what they were going for

I thought that too. Because he just disappears after the painting so I thought he 'became' Freddy (which, I guess, acting wise he was so maybe that's why they had to have him disappear) much like the other actors ' became' their characters. I did like that part of it incidentally.

Also, how many pills did they take?! It seemed like a lot and sleeping pills are very easy to overdose on so it seemed like a lot to me.

Too many.

New Nightmare is a great film. The only downside is the ending felt too rushed. They could of done much more, like have Nancy/Heather going through the 7 deadly sins to free her son.

i was hoping it would be an hour and a half
