The Kids!

I agree with previous comments on other boards about how good the acting & the message of the film conveys successfully.I particularly liked the acting amongst the kids & thought the interaction between them was nothing short of amazing-Just as if they were playing in real life in fact as opposed to acting that is.
I thought it was weird though how there were so few faces that I recognised & yet when I looked at the filmographies of the kids there are nine of them that just appeared in this particular film & then were never heard of again.
Whatever happened to them? Did they just disappear into thin air?! Were they just amateurs perhaps?
It seems such a shame that they were not offered other parts after they had successfully proven they could all act.Showbiz sure is a ruthless profession........

I know what ya mean! I loved LaToya Chisholm and Charlette Julius, and they haven't been in anything else - and they are so talented!

Yeah, the kids simply stole my heart. They were great! Not only that, but the movie would not have been the same without them.

Seriously that is so bizarre. It happens every now and then with a paticular person in some movie, but 9 kids all in the same movie?! You'd think they had to be like friends with the casting director but they were all so good, it doesn't make sense.

Adam Henderson who played Chet was in the Army last I heard 2002. My friend married one of his sisters.

I think the main three kids from this movie who continued their acting careers after this movie are, of course Elijah Wood (Stuart Simmons) Lexi Randall (Lidia Simmons) and Lucas Black (Ebb Lipnicki). Lexi Randall no longer acts but both Elijah Wood and Lucas Black continue to. Elijah and Lexi however, both had carrers before The War whereas Lucas did not. He once said in an interview that casting was done in Alabama where he is from and that is how he got the role. The other kids from the movie probabley did the same thing, got the role, but decided they didn't want to act after it. It's not the uncommon since the movie contained many kids who have never acted before that maybe after The War they didn't want to do it anymore.

Yes, the kids in this movie surprised me. I didn't know what I was in for when I rented this movie. The accents, I didn't know that they would have them. But when I heard Lexi start her narrative in that southern accent I was scared. I thought, "She does it right, but will anyone else in the movie do it right?!" I was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO impressed by all the kids in the film, especially Elijah Wood, he blew me away in this film, everything he said just sounded natural, and the other kids were great as well. This movie is so good. And I've only seen half of it!!

I was ready something about this movie that was written by Ebert, and although he doesn't like the film much, he comented on LaToya Chilsolms performance aswell, calling her breathtaking. Last I heard she went into gynocology, or something similar.

I also have to agree that this movie was excellent and the acting was wonderful.

I have not seen this movie, but my neighbor, Jennifer Tyler was in this film. She played Ula Lipnicki. I asked her what it was like working with the cast and she said it was great and they were all awesome. She is now living in California to further pursue her acting career. i know this because my cousin Lindsay is best friends with Jennifer and also lives in California. Lindsay is also an actress.

Lidia the one telling the story (which was my favorite character) was in Designing Women and few other things like Sarah Plain and Tall. We all know Elijah Woods has been in countless movies, but the others basically did this movie and that's it. I personally think kids get discouraged by the film industry or they think one film will bring more work and it doesn't happen.

I agree with everything on this thread. This movie also reminded me of my childhood. Growing up in the south, without a lot of money, at the same time (although) i would have been 6 or 7, not 10 or 12. but my friends were older and believe me i tried to keep up. I also lived with my gramma during the summers in rural Kentucky, the scenery and authentic look blew me away. We also had local bullies and built clubhouses out of cardboard boxes and junk. Great movie, great actors and great cinematography. I never heard of this movie till i found it on netflix today. now it will be up there with my favorites.

I think "The War" is an underrated classic. It reminded me a little of my childhood growing up in Clifton, NJ USA in the '70s. I remember occasional battles between groups of neighborhood kids. It was a miracle no one was seriously hurt. I think kids growing up then didn't have as much adult supervision. So we learned how to fight our own battles.
