Elvadine's Monologue

NOW THAT WAS BILLIANT. The best scene in this whole movie. This movie rocked so much and it sucks because a lot of people don't know about it. I'm going to tell a couple of my friends to rent this film because it's so good. I was so impressed with all the performances. NOT ONE lacked! Especially the kids. Elvadine had the best performance in this film besides Elijah Wood's. I must say that I was truly and utterly impressed!

Alright, I'll tell you. I was sayin' "Elvadine, what's YOU gots to write about? Been in the sixth grade your whole good-for-nuthin' life. Ain't GOT no daddy. Never goes anywhere but where your feets take you. Onliest money that ever belong to you in the whole world was twenty dollars you gots yourself in a birthday card, from your uncle last year." But it really wasn't for my birthday. Really, it was for layin' over his lap and letting him spank me with my underpants down. And now here you come along, shovin' me in the back of the room, where I can't even see too good, which means I'm prob'ly not gonna graduate this summer neither, Just 'cuz you read how some white man say Life be like a bowlful o' cherries, I've gotsta come up with some big hit sayin' Well, fine. I'll just write down how happy I'm gonna be to get 20 more dollars on my birthday. Never mind what he's got planned for me THIS year. And I'm gonna write, how maybe the new man my momma been seein' might stop drinkin', and treat me nice, and maybe he's gonna adopt me, and take us off the welfare. And at the end, I'm gonna be sure put.

"Life Sure is a bowl full of Cherries."

But to tell you the truth, Miss Strapford, I think you, and that book, and this whole class, be a bowl full of sh*t.

"I don't like so much freedom down there. It makes me tingly in my giblets."

Thanks for posting her monologue here!

Splendid!! I missed some parts because I was so busy calling all my friends and family telling them that they must watch this film!

I love that scene!

The teacher was so ignorant to some of the rougher places in the south. All she knew was her own plummy little self-important existence. I hope that monologue got through to those viewers who really need to hear it.

Those little sh!ts went crazy. Reminded me of my growing up actually.

I can agree at times. Childhood was crazy... growing up in the 90s.

It;s kinda funny but then really not, I can't decide. Still love it though.

Is that in The War? Or something else? I was just curious...I've never seen The War because none of the stores here have one.

i came on this board for the sole purpose of elvidine's class room monologue. that was AWESOME. as for everyone praising elvidine, let's not leave out her sister. LOVE HER. when she jumped off the tree to raise up the stuff, screaming, 'hallelujah!!!!'. classic. whenever they would dance & sing together, they were all so adorable. as for the rest of the cast, the casting director did an excellent job. my mom grew up in mississippi in the 40s & 50s & she said the portrayal is very well done, from the casting to the environment, & story. i gave the movie a 9, can't think of any reason not to give a 10 really, but i rarely give 10s. lol.

The movie is set in 1972. I was the same ages as Lydia, Elvadine and Amber during that time. The movei is accurate. It was almost like watching home movies for those of us that grew up in small southern towns during that time.

It's called a llaaaannce--Hellooooo

That scene is worth watching the entire movie.

I came here for the sole purpose of seeing if anyone else was as nauseated by this monologue as I was. Thankfully there is another thread dedicated to that, but I'm replying here just to say I find it laughable that anyone enjoyed her "performance" if it can be called that. I made it halfway through her garbage before turning the channel for the rest of the duration of it. Seriously, it's that bad. She is crap, and I'm entirely happy to find out she has ONE credit to her name. She doesn't deserve that. A good movie. Some of the fake southern accents were disgusting, but her long solo was vomit-worthy, and I was cringing every time she did that lip-sucking thing or whatever during it. Oh, and yeah, I'll be modifying this and posting this on the other thread too. Enjoy.

Do whatever you have to do. lol

The thing about the monologue for me is that I get the feeling that the writer of the movie was not the same person who wrote that brilliant monologue.

reply

Scary thing...or good thing maybe, is that it was realistic as there are many 12 or even 10
Year olds ...in the inner city, who can on their own articulate just what they are feeling in
Such a mature way that you think, They mustve been on this earth before. The retention thing,
Whether just continuing an earlier conversation or as depicted in the film is an impressive skill
that helps in forming such a monologue.

reply

To the person who said the southern accents are fake, why would you say that. Watch videos of current "American Idol" contestant Burnell Taylor and you'll see he talks that way. In that song "I'm Here" that is from "The Color Purple," he pronounces the word chair "chay-uh."

The scene is undoubtedly entertaining, but I don’t think it at all believable. I think the teacher, being as racist as she was, would’ve muzzled Elvadine rather than allow her to speak for as long as she does, the way that she does. Again, I enjoy the scene, but don’t buy it.

reply

Oh, yeah, I made this post when I was 16. It's been almost ten years since then and I've re-watched the scene and while I think that actress does a fine job delivering the monologue, the entire scene is broad and contrived. I wonder how the rest of the film holds up... if at all.

I think there's been a rape up there!

I think of it as a 2-1/2-star movie. My favorite thing about it is Mare Winningham, and she’s utilized the least.
