Ages of boys in war of the buttons

am slightly a little confused because in the movie, the boys are portrayed as being like 15 but i know that gregg fitzgerald who played fergus is a lot older so can anyone help me with this because its a bit confusing.

well for most of the boys, they are about 14 and 15 but for some of the younger ones, they are about 11 and 12.

he was only 15-16 when it was filmed
