Other Commnets on 'Vanya on 42nd'
One of things I noticed with a second viewing of "Vanya on 42nd" was very faint sound of police siren from outside the theater. It's strange to hear it because on the one hand, it's an accidental anachronism, like the I<3NY coffee cup, and yet OTOH, that achronism, while tangible is so distant to our perception.
I think my favorite actor was Brooke Smith simply because her portrayal of Sonya moved me the most. That's saying a lot because I'm usually not moved by scenes of heartbreak and suffering in movies. Not saying I'm cold, but that Smith really conveyed pathos. For my money, much could be written about Vanya, Sonya, and the Doctor imprisoned with stoic realism sandwiched between his hedonism and idealism. Watching "Vanya on 42nd" just made me think of life as I know it, people as I know them and interact with them. I mean it's, dare I say, very "moral" in a way.
