I watched this movie a while ago and I thought it was brilliant. So then I looked for more, and ended up watching The Barber of Siberia (also directed by Mikhalkov) and that wasn't so great.
So does anyone have any recomendations?
Any good Russian movies(apart from the obvious Eisenstein stuff)?
Hee. Just watched Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears. With a title like that I expected it to be quite crappy, to be honest. Surprisingly it wasn't! I quite enjoyed it, and it had really funny moments.(Pretty sexist ideas at times, but hey, it's the 70s). Thanks for the recommendation.
I'll try to watch the others, this one was the easiest to find.
Russian cinema has so many great movies, yet you foreigners know only Tarkovsky, probably the most boring director ever (well, except 'Ivan's Chilhood'). What a shame. Criterion released some greats like 'Ballad of a Soldier', and that's all. Great movies are being ignored for not having enough PR and buzz, but that's not their fault. Russian edition of Empire magazine recently released 2 lists of 100 Best Russian films of all time: critics choice and readers choice. Unfortunatelly for you, you will not be able to find most of these with translation, so stick with Stalker and Solaris so far.
“Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears” is so much more than a “chick flick”. And if you liked it I would recommend you Rodnya (Kinfolk), 1981 with great Nonna Mordyukova in a leading role also directed by Nikita Mikhalkov, Pokrovskiye vorota (The Pokrovsky Gates), 1982 and Sluzhebnyy roman (Office Romance), 1977.

I know what you mean. I have always thought that there are lots of incredible films (and music) in Russian that are completely unknown to the outside world. And yes, that might be lack of PR, etc, but it's still very sad.
Plus, even if you know what you are looking for, many of the films mentioned in this thread are hard to find (translated or original, I don't mind) for a foreigner. I wandered around some Russian video-stores in town, trying to find the stuff you guys recommend, and you know what I mostly found? Hollywood stuff with Russian dubbing.
I haven't scene it yet but I hear the upcoming 12 which is a russian remake of 12 Angry Men is really well done. It is also directed by the guy who Directed Burnt By The Sun (sorry I forgot his name).
