When Jackie Chan gets kicked onto the hot coals, if you look real quick you can see the guy who kicks him give this weird goofy smile and thumbs up. (I suppose it was directed at the film crew)

It just seems like a little noteworthy "out of character" moment. I'll go now.

It's not directed at the crew nor is he breaking the fourth wall. He's looking at his partner, the guy who had just been attacking Jackie with the long metal pole, he's below him to his right. He shoots him a thumbs up to let him know Wong Fei-hung was just knocked into the fire pit.
