Great stunts, poor movie.

I was disgusted by the poor narrative of this movie. Yeah, it's great to see Jacky going all Old Skool (shirt off, pose-down fu, pole fighting, etc.) but I defy anyone to say that this movie had good storytelling.

SPOILERS - The plot just jumps around leisurely. Jacky starts out being a juvenile moron who acts impulsively. Then, without any warning, he becomes an angry badass in the last 15 minutes. Where was the character development? Oooooh - his dad makes him write on fans and water plants and suddenly he's ready to be a champion of the Chinese people?

The worst was that he finally defeats the king baddie (who doesn't even get what he deserves, considering that there were lesser Axe Gang guys who had broken slivers in their faces and were flung out windows) and the movie completely ends with an epilogue that doesn't even include Fei Hung!

"Legend of the Drunken Master" is a sequel to the movie "Drunken Master" in 1979. YOu should have seen "Drunken Master" first. There, he didn't know the drunken boxing at first. Then his uncle taught him this technique. You should watch it. It's a great movie. If you watch it, you'll understand the "Legend of the Drunken Master."

Well it sounds like you watched the Dubbed version. Of course that doesnt make sense because stupid Mirimax dubbed with ridiculous lines. Watch the Cantonese version that's where the story makes sense.

What Suboloc said is true. Most of the character development was done in the first film Drunken Master. The Legend of Drunken Master is actually Drunken Master 2. You should always watch the original Cantonese version of martial arts film. Anything that gets Americanized will have missing parts and bad translations. I'm not surprised if you didn't understand the story. Drunken Master 2 is Jackie Chan's best film I think. Besides "Fearless Hyena" and a few of his other older films (Project A, Armor of God, Winners and Sinners, Who Am I, etc...) that are good, this is Jackie's best film.

Fei-Hung was included in the epilogue, just he was suffering from the effects of the industrial alcohol he drank to defeat the bad guy, you see him for a few seconds where he can't talk properly and acts like he's been brain damaged.

In the Miramax version, that part has been cut.

It is the only cut in the whole movie made for AMerican release, because people thought it was dumb. I've never seen it but would like to see what the fuss is about.

Speaking as someone who has seen the original ending, I can understand why they cut it. First off, I don't think anyone over here would find it funny. Considering most Americans don't know the saga of Wong Fei-Hung the ending could be seen as a downer because you see the hero left as a blind, mentally retarded cripple. Plus, I'm sure someone would complain/protest that the film was making fun of the mentally challenged.

The original Cantonese version of the movie is also dubbed.

I am not kidding.

Dubbing is a common (and stupid) technique done in HK so they dont have to do live sound recording. All the audio (speech, audio effects) are added post-production.

If you'd done some research on the subject, you'd know that most Hong Kong films up until the late 1990's were dubbed in Cantonese,not just English, due to low-budget financial constraints and lack of technology to do it. So it's not a "stupid" technique, it was done because for a long time that's the only way they made their films. Look up stuff on it, before you go calling it "stupid", please.

OP you clearly have a learning disability if you didn't follow or understand any of the character development in the movie. This movie is far from thought provoking or complex either, so no I'm not being an *beep* when I say that.
