best martial arts movies ever made

I recently started to get really into martial arts movies. I've always been interested in them, but not as heavaly as now.
So I am wondering witch are the best 10 martial arts movies ever made. I'm going to have a martial-arts-movie-night with some friends in a couple of months, so I could use some good tips. I'll use the best movies mentioned (if I can find them; it's hard to find kung fu-movies in Belgium). So everyone, write down your Top Ten please!

This is mine so far:
- The legend of the drunken master

reply

1. Fist of Legend
2. Drunken Master
3. Martial Arts Of Shaolin
4. Drunken Master II
5. Fist of Fury
6. Ong-Bak
7. 36th Chamber of Shaolin
8. Iron Monkey
9. Enter The Dragon
10. Once Upon A Time In China

I picked these titles because they're all my favorites and you shouldn't have too hard of a time finding them. See ya!

How could you not put ENTER THE DRAGON on there?!?!?!? That is easily one of the greatest martial arts films of all time. Def one of Lee's best.

Oh yes, you're so right! It's my personal favorite Bruce Lee flick.

I disagree 'Ong Bak' is the better movie, much better story telling, and the action kicks in a much more sensible way. Just a bit of everything when it's needed. Also.... 'Enter the Dragon' was on the initial list! Can't you read people? It's a good list by the way.

I agree...good list BUT no Sammo??? (no Snake in the Eagle's Shadow)

check out:

Pedicab Driver
Enter the Fat Dragon
The Magnificent Butcher
Knockabout
Prodigal Son
The Victim

there are also some great Yuen Biao & Donnie Yen movies...

reply

Awesome taste right here.

reply

Damn, I forgot Magnificent Butcher and The Prodigal Son. Knockabout was pretty good as well. There are just way to many great martial arts films. It's hard to remember them all. Prodigal Son would definitely be in my Top 25 though.

reply

enter the dragon is number 9 on his list

reply

Great list most of those are my personal favorite.

Most of my Top 20 list should have been seen by everyone who's a martial arts fanatic. If you haven't see ALL of these movies, find them and watch them immediately. The 2 you might not have hear of "Dragon Tiger Gate (Donnie Yen)" & The Buddhist Fist (Shun-Yee Yuen & Siu Ming Tsui) are must see films. Even the flix not on my Top 20 are worth seeing. Everyone should have seen Shaolin Soccer and Wing Chun by now, but seek out "Shaolin vs Lama", Flashpoint (Donnie Yen), Challenge of the Ninja (Gordon Lui) & The Rebel (Johnny Nguyen & Dustin Nguyen).

All I know is I would not want to *beep* with Ken Lo. That last fight scene is one of the best ever made.

reply

not saying its a top 10 contender. But Operation Scorpio/Scorpion King is a very underrated movie. The fights of Jung Yuen were just frickin amazing.

Theres some wirework, but very seamless so it doesnt feel that bad as you might think it will

Heres a few clips to get you acquainted with it

In the 2nd clip just look at the move he does at 1:33

Guess what they say about Taekwondo is true, it truly does look good.

What the hell did you do to your haaaand?

1. Enter The Dragon

3. Project A
4. Ong-Bak
5. Dragons Forever
6. Wheels On Meals
7. Fist Of Legend
8. Millionaire's Express
9. Close Encounters Of The Spooky Kind
10. The Magnificent Butcher

reply

You are all wrong. Undeafeatable is, without any doubt, the greatest film ever made, let alone the greatest martial arts film ever made.

reply

Great list!

Personally, I like movies which contain martial arts, but in which the martial arts do not form the bulk of the movie. I also like the martial arts scenes to be not too much over the top and/or more or less 'realistic' (or at least, feeling 'realistically').

Here is my personal top ten of 'martial arts' movies for this moment.

1. 'Zatoichi' (2003)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ht5y1rX2zk

2. Eastern Promises http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZFkSKgcUpA

3. Gohatto http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYRBJ_HrALQ

4. Old Boy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ufss5ot_vGE

5. Mongol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hh9uK95p9vg

6. Twilight Samurai http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cg5qChXeDdI

7. Alatriste www.youtube.com/watch?v=cw8TYvDqRuQ

8. A History of Violence http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ug4TkRz3bUY

9. Akahige

10. There is a fight scene between two heavily armored insects (Lucanus Cervus or stag beetle) in 'Microcosmos'. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8131450577923045041&q=mic rocosmos&ei=3PU_SPv3DYPeigLFk9WxCQ
(the fight starts at 48.00)

I know this is an old post but I hope this is not a real list of best martial arts films. Half of these films don't even countain any martial arts.

What is your function?

reply

Even if most of those movies don't fall into the traditional category of martial arts cinema, it's still an excellent group of films.

On topic, Fist of Legend used to be an old favorite of mine but I've grown to appreciate Drunken Master 2 more and more over the years. I've always liked how the film doesn't take itself too seriously(like most MA movies) and throws in a good amount of light-hearted humor.

reply

They might not be what you would consider 'traditional' martial arts films, but all of most certainly do contain scenes showcasing martial arts!

reply

1. The Legend of Drunken Master (1994)
2. Tom Yum Goong (2005)
3. Fist of Legend (1994)
4. Ong Bak (2003)
5. The Tai Chi Master (2003, Wu Jing)
6. Drunken Master (1978)
7. Eight Diagram Pole Fighter (1983)
8. The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978)
9. Fearless Hyena (1979)
10. Chocolate (2008)

And no, Bruce Lee's movies will never make my top 10 list. I don't care how great of a martial artist he was in reality. I personally found his movies to be mediocre (if not borderline inept) in terms of action choreography.

I do!

"chinese connection" is a must... didnt see it listed.. its my favorite

reply

I have to take issue with ebossert's assertion that Bruce Lee's movies were mediocre and borderline inept in terms of fight action. Those movies were made at a time when most martial arts action was alot of swordplay and wires in period pieces and not part of the pop culture in the US and other parts of the world until the arrival of Lee riding his popularity as Kato from the Green Hornet. Lee revolutionized and modernized fight choreography and brought where it is today. Of course, most of his movies don't really stand up to what Chan and Ping have updated and capitalized on since but without his popularity and creativity, the art of fight action in movies around the rest of the world would still be in the dark ages with alot fisticuffs, stereotypical karate chops and the occasional judo throw while chinese cinema would still be using alot of wirework and fast motion comic camera work. His movies paved the way for the kind of action we see today from everything from Jackie Chan to Tony Jaa. Just about every fight scene in all types of movies over the last 40 yrs or more bears the influence of Bruce Lee. Obviously if you've grown up on more recent movies then watch Lee's movies, you would think them to be inferior and I wouldn't expect anyone to put them on a list if they didn't like them but please respect the history of the movie fight game.

I don't know if these are the best but they are my favorites:

Fist of Legend
The Legend of Drunken Master
Ong Bak
Iron Monkey
Once Upon A Time in China
Flashpoint
Way of the Dragon
Game of Death (original unreleased)
Blade II
The Protector

The Prodigal Son is the best film I've seen as it has not a single weakness. I have about fifty Golden Harvest and Shaw Bros. movies, and this film is just so expertly made. Not a single scene is poor.
