Mikolaj changing his mind on being killed

Can anybody explain why Mikolaj changes his mind wanting to die (being killed)after first fake shot by karol?

reply

I don't know. Who knows what a person feels at the moment of their execution and how their regard for life might alter.

How old are you?

The notion that "your life is miserable and you want to end it", opposed to "your life is miserable, but life wants to end it" is fairly profound.

One can be corrected - the other is forever.

Basically, Mikolaj was faced with that "forever" solution, and realized that his problems really weren't that bad, and life is worth living.

who's to say?

I was thinking how both "deaths" changed someone. Mikolaj was changed after he was "shot." And Julie Delpy's character was changed after Karol's "death". It's like how do we react when someone dies?

reply

Well... it would be really cheap if the script allowed Mikolaj to say what changed his mind. I suppose such experiences can't really be articulated in words; it's a change in his heart deep down but he knows it's real and he'll run with it.

I thought the fact that Karol showed he cared enough to at least give him a chance to really think about it and he showed in that scene he didn't want him to die either thus showing him friendship, maybe I am off but that's how I saw it.

Excellent observation, underscored by the fact that Mikolaj insisted he take the money anyway, "You've earned it."

Wonderful scene of "rebirth," following the aborted killing, the both of them skidding on the frozen lake, and the comment "anything is possible," then THAT LOOK that Karol gave Mikolaj!

That often happens in suicide. People who throw themselves off the bridge or swallow the pills often think "OMG, I just realized I could have fixed everything" and lessen the impact of the fall and swim to shore or make themselves vomit or call 911. That's why suicide is termed "a permanent solution to a temporary problem". As a health teacher explained it, most people who try to kill themselves don't really want to die, just want the pain to stop.

Mikolaj thinks he is shot and realizes he doesn't want to die after all.

I've heard of people who genuinely attempted suicide, athough they survived it, and later describe that they no longer wish to die, but they don't renounce their earlier intention (i.e., they don't say, "Oh my God, what was I doing?!"). I know it makes no sense. I guess you would have to "be there" to understand it, and I know I will never be there, so I will never understand it.

The possibilities I have in mind:

1) As a previous poster said, he was touched that somebody cared.

2) It seemed to have taken him a little while to realize that he had not been shot. For a while he thought he was dying and had the time to think about what that meant (no more tomorrows, etc.) and decided he didn't want it. So Karol did indeed deserve his pay, because Mikolaj got to "die," and better still, he was able to keep on living.

3) It was just too exhausting and nerve-wracking, even if for just a few minutes, to do it over all again.
