Violent shots missing from true lies dvd?

I recently got the dvd and noticed certain violent shots are cut from the dvd?

I have it on dvd (US version) and I didn't notice anything missing. Do they really edit out violent scenes for UK releases?

reply

i have never ever come across this on dvd before. where the hell do they get off editing a *beep* dvd release? it is really not on.

Do you know what scenes are but from please?

For one thing, I vividly remember Harry having TWO "hit in the nose" fantasies in the theatrical release: one where he hits the car salesman in the face, which is still in the film, and one where he hits Helen in the face at dinner the night he finds out she met the salesman for lunch. I remember it clearly because the two scenes were so similar I pointedly thought it was overkill to have both in the film.

Evidently someone else thought so too, because by the time the movie started running on cable the "Helen hit" had disappeared. I imagine that a second thought about an angle concerning domestic violence may have also played a role in cutting that scene.

I find it odd that I remember that scene so clearly, yet I can find no mention of it anywhere.

I was just wondering if you have found out yet if such a scene exists? Harry hitting Helen in a day dream sounds damn hilarious!

Also I bought the Fox release of True Lies on DVD recently from Morrisons and from what I gather from this website ( http://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=2078645 ) there is no cut scenes in the version I have. Also worth mentioning the domestic abuse scene isn't listed on that site.

I don't remember ever seeing that scene of Harry hitting Helen.

I saw this back in 1994 in the theatre and there was no fantasy sequence of Helen getting punched like Bill Paxton did. Some troll invented this nonsense inside his own tiny head a year or so ago.

snelling, I'm not a troll, and I clearly remember that scene. As I said before, after I saw both scenes I thought they were too similar, and wondered about it. However, I might have seen that in an early cable cut, or possibly I saw the movie in preview and it was cut for general release. It's been a long time, obviously, but I sure remember having that thought about the similar scenes.

reply

I remember the Harry hitting Helen scene too, it's definitely not made up. I'm surprised it's not mentioned in IMDb's Alternative Versions section.

I only ever saw it in the UK theatrical release, it has been missing from every release I've seen since. I always assumed this is what the message on the box about the film being edited was referring to. I always thought they cut it because it's a bit too violent having Harry smash his wife's face in. I think it's fairly easy to tell the scene was there originally as both the time he hits Simon and the time he hits Helen are preceded by the same slow zoom in on Arnie's face with a heartbeat sound slowly pounding louder and louder.

I wonder if that scene will ever see the light of day again, even if it's just in a deleted scenes section? It took long enough to get a version of The Abyss that didn't censor the rat breathing liquid scene...

reply

With the intense (and rightfully so) focus on domestic violence, I seriously doubt that scene will ever again see the light of day.

BTW, I appreciate the confirmation. It's nice to know I'm not getting senile and making up memories. LOL I suppose people like snelling don't understand that just because they may not have personally seen something doesn't mean it didn't happen. LOL

I'm with vranger on this one.

One scene I remember that I cannot find anywhere is Helen fainting when Harry kills people for the first time (in the torture room) in front of her. She faints. And Harry slaps her to wake her up. The slap is REALLY loud, but the hand motion is subtle. Anyone else remember this?

reply

OK, the latest UK DVD release linked to on this thread is being called "Uncut".

But this is not true if the two posters on here are correct about there being a scene where Arnie knocks out his wife.

I have a vivid memory of catching True Lies in the theater and I do not recall any such scene where Harry has a daydream of hitting Helen in the nose. It seems like if there would have been such a scene it would have been right after the zoom in on Harry's "I know you're lying, b----!" look. I think one was enough. Two and then they would have had to make it a running joke. LOL!!!

It looks like there were a lot of cuts of this movie. I don't remember seeing Helen faint after the torture.

reply

What kind of scenes?

reply

Bill Paxton's daydream nose-death shot is reduced, there's a neck snapping re-edited, an ear clap and hand dryer beating removed and the spike in the interrogator guard's eye is edited by removing a second or so of it visible in his eye before he falls; the result of the censored version of this scene, oddly, looks more violent as it gives the impression of a more powerful impact from the spike, so nice shot in the foot there BBFC... Think the hook in the terrorist coming through the door just after is reduced too: no lifting of the hook after impact or the 'crunch' as Arnie does so.....

Early UK DVD's escaped the cuts... later ones didn't. Think it's been released uncut now on dvd but with no fanfare.

Can't remember if there are any others...

I have the US Laserdisc. Still cool.

"True Lies" was cut in the UK to achieve a '15' rating (rather than an '18' rating). In the UK all films and DVDs have to get a rating by law.

UK cinema version cut by 1 second
1995 VHS cut by 8 seconds
2001 DVD cut by 20 seconds http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00005955V/
2010 DVD is uncut http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003903STI/

Lots of action movies were cut to get a '15' rating (e.g. "Terminator 2"). These days they cut "Hunger Games" to get a '12' rating.

reply

Exactly, it's a commercial decision by the distributor to cut a film in order to get a less restrictive rating, not "censorship" by the BBFC.

My brother got the Commando dvd and that is cut... two scenes cut are were he snaps that guys neck on the plane and puts the cover on him and where Bill Dukes falls and gets impaled on that wood or whatever... I was going to buy it myself until I saw the cuts.

I hate censorship. I really do. I'm especially afraid of censorship in the UK because I'm afraid it will inevitably cross the pond and surface here in the US as well.

Let's tone down the violence, exclude easily imitable moves, and avoid anything having to do with nunchucks. We already see it in our cartoons. I just how this disease doesn't spread to our cinema as well.

I'm from the UK and dvd's I own seen fine and uncut just these are two examples of cut ones (both Schwarzenegger) The UK is one of the worst for it I think going by the net and video's banned/video nasty's on wiki list....

reply

The "Commando" UK DVD used a master for the German version, so quite a bit was cut out. The UK Blu-ray is fully uncut, though. The US DVD is uncut and also contains the director's cut.

"Eraser" UK DVD is cut by over 3 minutes.

The BBFC recently released their private reports for "Total Recall" and "Terminator 2":

reply

Maybe that is the case. Watching it recently it really doesn't seem like there's any R rated violence in this movie.
