This movie is horrible

My cousin and I decided to watch this on netflix when our DVD player wouldn't work. We spent the next hour+ laughing at it and saying, "What?" at the ridiculousness.

This board is probably dead. I don't even care. I just had to say that this movie was so lame. I barely remembered it from childhood but my cousin kept saying, "This is ruining my childhood." Ha. Too funny!

Thumbelina is such a sad, horrible, horrible character.

This movie is great for kids, I suppose. Since they aren't the best judges of movies.

Thumbelina is horrible. So very horrible.

She's a horribly written character.

She goes along with everything. She gets kidnapped but it's okay because she's going to 'be a star.'

Everyone manhandles her and she doesn't even fight it off. A creepy beetle guy kissing all over you? Maybe ask him to stop once or twice... but then if he puts you on a stage it's cool!

Weirdo bugs call her ugly? She cries by herself. Never mind that they're bugs, everyone else calls her beautiful, and those beetles were clearly insane anyway.

She falls in love in two seconds.

No character development. In the beginning: innocent and sweet. In the end: innocent and sweet... but with wings! Yay!

Completely helpless and negative. Relies on others to save her and when they say they will she's all, "it's pointless! whine whine whine!"

"Oh my True Love who I've known for fifteen seconds is dead? May as well marry this old mole!!" Why? Because he'll take care of her? She should take care of herself. Or, here's a thought--go back to her poor mother! She never seems to try to get home. Just whines about it and then forgets about it a second later.

She didn't even try to escape. She DID have a choice.

She did. She could, y'know, escape. Or at least attempt. They were able to dress her in that crazy outfit. She even willingly danced.

That seems to be all she is.

Yes really.

And that's why she's a lame character.

That's called giving up. I understand her tiny size and circumstances could make her more prone to being afraid but the writers should have used that as a good time to show that it doesn't matter your size--you can overcome anything.

She did prove to be completely helpless, so maybe she can't take of herself. She's very useless. But she should have tried.

She tried to escape once? Just once? And the toads blocked her way? What a lame excuse. If you've been kidnapped and the person just stands in your way would you just give up? Hopefully not.

How about before when they were dressing her? Or when she first ran into him? Instead of engaging in conversation with the obvious sexual predator she could have ran off.

No, not so much. Actually, I take that back. She is. When she's on stage or the center of attention. In the midst of kidnappings.

Yes, but this was made in '94. You can have people fall in love at first sight with more substance. Easy peasy.

There is when that's all you are.

Yup.

Hm... I can't remember specifics. I saw this once a few days ago so I don't have every scene memorized. I don't remember her ever saving herself.

"Probably." "Maybe." "Might have." Those are lame phrases. No one should give up because something might stop them.

Happy to be made a star in the midst of all this drama? That's just sad. And she wasn't happy at the beginning. Right off the bat she's whining about being the only person of her size. Which I get, of course, because that would suck. But it still means she was negative right off the bat.

All of the original stories are twisted and morbid and sad lol

She started to show signs of being a fighter. She said no to the toad. The first no she said.

...I forget what the last point is. So I'll just say okay.

Once is better than not at all. But it still isn't good.

You mean as soon as she wakes up in the flower? So, her introduction wasn't negative. But the rest of her was.

Doesn't mean you're right.

There are one million reasons for her the say no.

Yeah there's a lot of people hating on this just because it's not a Disney film. I found this film to be rather enjoyable, but certainly not perfect. Thumbelina isn't any dumber than characters such as Snow White in that classic. That's the way these characters are written, truly naive, but in this world of internet and all that people just simply can't understand what that is like. I love that comment above talking about lead actress being terrible despite it being the same one from the almost universally praised Little Mermaid

ER, HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

I haven't seen Swan Princess. If I have, I was quite young and don't remember it. So I can't say much about that.

This movie isn't amazing.

My cousin and I are 22 and 23 and we were having a PJ day, too! It's been raining here like crazy--perfect day for it.

Funny, I thought I was the only girl who hated this movie, and I'm 20. o_0

Normally, I like Don Bluth's work, but this one was trying WAY hard to be like a Disney film, and the characters are all generic and annoying (with the exception of Berkley Beetle, the only funny character). Thumbelina's constant whining doesn't help either. She's just a pessimist that heavily relys on Jacquimoe or Corneilious (until the very end, which was rather forced)!

It starts out okay, but after Thumbelina gets captured by Mrs. Toad, that's when the movie starts being lame and silly.

Frankly, I'd rather watch "Rock-A-Doodle" or "Pebble and the Penguin" any day over this film! The only Don Bluth film slightly worse than this, is "A Troll in Central Park". -_-

P.S- "The Swan Princess" is actually WAY better than this movie, you should give it a try. ;)

I've noticed this about her, too, polarbearforlife76. I could be wrong--and this could because it is hard to distinguish tone over the internet--but it seems only her opinions are right. If you disagree with her, she will say so and make it seem like you are wrong for thinking otherwise. Again, this is just the tone of her posts to me.

I'll have to give those other movies a try!

This film was just so bad. It was funny when it wasn't supposed to be and awkward when it was supposed to be funny or romantic.

I understand that this movie is dear to your childhood and you miss being a child. A lot of people feel like that. But you seem to aggressively go after people who disagree with you. Not only do you seem to seek out any and every post that may say something negative about the film, you just have to get the last word in the argument. It's great that you enjoy this movie. A lot of other people don't. You don't need to tell them repeatedly that you disagree.

Not so much in this thread--my original post basically welcomed it.

Kids love it...that's all that matters.

But I think for the voice of Thumbelina they found the most retarded sounding grown-up and stuck a Radio Shack mic in her hand and then hit the record button. Absolutely the worst performance and production.

I know I am a year late in answering. But I love this movie to. There are far worse movies out there. And I thought Jodi aka The Little Mermaid was great as Thumbelina.

reply

Thumbelina did become more active towards the end though.
It is clearly a "trying so hard to be Disney without ever reaching their level of quality" movie though.
