So Cornelius didn't even ask her to marry him

Sorry if this has been discussed before..
In the movie, he puts the ring on Thumbelina yet he never really asked her hand in marriage (unless it happened before and we just didn't see it). I just always thought that was funny because the most he asked of her was to meet his parents and yet a lot of the characters comment on how Thumbelina is going to marry the prince or how she was engaged to him.

He does in the end, when she finds him in the valley of the fairies.

The ring, as I see it, is not meant to be an engagement ring. She gives him the forgetmenots, He gives her the ring as his "forgetmenots".

The only People actually saying that she is marrying the prince are speculating.

"is she marrying the fairy prince, mum?" "perhaps".
