catcher in the rye. J.D. Salinger.
probably one of the most famous, cliche books ever written, but still good.

I'd agree that "Catcher in the Rye" seems pretty cliched today, but when it came out in 1951 it was not only not cliched, it was pretty shocking in the way it depicted the cloistered life of boarding school kids. That life, and the disillusionment that Holden felt during the two days in which the novel takes place, has since been so universally felt that it became a huge hit with college students.

Accordingly, in the 55 years since its first publication, the ideas in "Catcher" have been done and redone to death, but Salinger's work (he never wrote another novel; a dozen or so short stories were published before he went into almost total seclusion in the 1960s) was far from cliched when it first hit the shelves. It's become an icon and influenced countless other stories for a reason: it resonates. But it's not fair to call it cliched when it was the original and one of the best. That would be like saying "MacBeth" is cliched because since Shakespeare wrote it in the early 1600s, there have been hundreds of stories about ambitious people whose unscrupulousness and treachery have come back to haunt them.

Not to be overly philosophical, but I just wanted to add some perspective. If the poster, or anyone else, hasn't read "Catcher in the Rye," he or she should have an accurate idea of what they're getting before they open to the title page.
