You'll have to go the illegal download route. See foriegnmoviesddl.com. They have it with english subtitles. You'll have to get a rapidshare account, the VLC media player, and learn about RARs and other arcane stuff. I'm not making a recommendation for this one way or the other, but many gems unreleased in the US are out there, and more and more film festers are getting their fix this way (cheaper than buying a hacked all-region DVD player and buying the DVD off of a brit site, which is another option) It all depends on your technological savvy and moral stance on downloading (someone's) copyrighted content.

amazon brit link (you need a DVD player that plays region 2 PAL. If you want to watch on your PC, you can buy region-free DVD player software (scan on
"region-free dvd pc software" and you will get some choices).

there should be a riot about this smart-ass invention of region-code by those executives or lawyers or whatever. the first time i heard this i really can't believe they can do such a thing to customers. well, life finds its way out.
by the way, a small correction to the nice info above: a rapidshare account is not required. without it, you can download only 1 file at a time.

Sorry, you are correct that you can download from RS for free. However, it can take a lot of time as they prioritize slots and bandwidth for pay users. Also VLC media player (which is free) will play PAL DVDs in a US-coded DVD player, so nothing to buy there if you go that route.

The reigon-code business is, I think, a way to maximize profits for blockbusters. Release in one region, then another in a few months. Different encoding schemes stop the inevitable piracy. On the other hand PAL vs. NTSC evolved more out of incompatible regional standards back in the VHS days.

If I remember correctly, I did see this on DVD in the US a number of years back. What often happens is that a US distributor will lose their rights to a foreign film, and it will go out of print, until (hopefully) someone else picks it up. Only then is eBay, Brit sites or downloading the way to go.

I think Netflix pulls these from rental once this happens.

Criterion just sent out an email that they are losing the rights to their StudioCanal films, which includes some of their essential art house collection (some Godard, Bresson, Renoir), a good example of this happening with higher-profile stuff.

In summary, if you want to see something bad enough, there are ways. And if Isabelle Huppert is involved, I have a will.

Back to Huppert: If you do have RS and the web site mentioned in my previous post, check out "home", "every man for himself" and "passion"(godard), "La Dentellière" (The Lacemaker) from 1977 (a very young IH). None of these available anywhere, from what I've researched.

Finally, Amazon US shows 6 new copies of La Separation (from resellers) for under $10! Problem solved, ignore everything I've just said, go get your movie legally.

Thanks! Try getting these films in New Zealand though! :)

Please be aware that foreignmoviesddl.com will corrupt your computer. My antivirus blocked it because of a trojan horse.

Try .org instead of .com

Yes, I agree that the site is (or was) a sewer of malware, popups, etc. I have always used Firefox, and installed ad-block plus. The site then displays with all the crappy ads cleaned out. This also helps most sites you might surf. I never realized how overloaded with ads a site like nytimes.com was until I called it up at work one day (on IE w/o adbp).

That said, what you're trying to get is the rapidshare/fileserve/etc. links to download the parts, then reassemble them and then make sure to virus-scan that. I use jDownloader to manage the downloading/assembling process.

You can now use http://forum.foreignmoviesddl.org/, which gives you a (safer?) text based list of films. I'm sure you can still get to a page with junk, but using ad-block and firefox should keep you safer than IE and nothing.
