I love this movie, but I just realized something....

I've been watching this movie since I was a kid and it still has one of my favorite opening sequences. However, I just realized at the end of the sequence when Derek announces their marriage and Odette stops him, she gets upset because she wants him to respect her as a person and not marry her based on looks, but isn't she doing just that?

Derek spends the rest of the movie learning to appreciate her for more than her looks, but she doesn't really develop as a character. Odette wants to know that Derek loves her for more than what she looks like, but never really expresses the non-superficial reasons she loves Derek.

Did I miss something or is she being hypocritical?

There are other things she could have seen in him that she never really expressed. Courage, loyalty, and she mentioned that he's quick when she and Puffin were luring him to the lake.

I really do agree that she should have had more development. But I think we're supposed to believe that she saw other things in him before.

Oh, I understand that there could have been other things she saw in him beforehand. My problem is, she asks him to express his reason for loving for her when she never really does that. She fell in love with him almost immediately when they saw each other as adults and then continued being in love with him while not telling him or anyone else why. Just that he'll come rescue her.

I thought something similar.

She stops the marriage, saying that he should love her for more than her beauty and then she full on packs up and leaves. Had she not been attacked by Rothbart, what would have happened? Would she and Derek have just never spoken again? Would she eventually come crawling back? Would Derek have eventually thought of another reason to love her without her being practically dead in his arms?

They bring said, I LOVE this movie. Just introduced it to my three year old!
