Best Aussie Movies

"The Sum of Us" and "Chopper" are the best I've seen so far.
Any other suggestions?

P.S. I'm American (in case I'm missing something very obvious to Australians)

Maybe try "Romper Stomper" if you like Crowe/violence or "Proof" a gentler movie again with Crowe and Hugo Weaving (MR Smith from the Matrix)

reply

Yes, I really like "Proof" very much. Don't forget, "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (also with Hugo Weaving) or, "The Quiet Earth" (sci-fi) I'd recommend going to Netflix (if you're a member) and click on their Aussie section. Or, just put in Hugo Weaving, Russell Crowe, Carrie Fox, Gillian Armstrong, Toni Collette... here on IMDB. Good luck
P.S. I recommend a wonderful adult drama called, "The Days of Chez Nous."

Peter Weir's 'The Last Wave' ... 'Heatwave' ... and here in the 21st century, how about 'Ten Canoes' ...

Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975)

The Boys (1998)

Little Fish (2005)

Anything with Toni Collette in it is great.

I can't remember the Australian name but in America is was the Efficiency Expert with Anthony Hopkins, Toni Collette's first movie and some cutie named Russell Crow playing the bad boy.

Strictly Ballroom

The Coca-Cola Kid-I didn't really like this one myself but it had a Stanley Steamer car in it which I thought was way cool. (Stanley Bros invented a car that ran on steam like a steam engine train before Ford rolled out his Model-A.)

Since I last posted, I've seen "Proof" which was pretty good and "Rabbit Proof Fence" which was AMAZING! and practically had me in tears. I also saw "A Cry in the Dark" (the Meryl Streep movie about the baby that gets eaten by a dog). I was wondering why none of you mentioned it so I thought I'd bring it up. I'm still waiting for "Romper Stomper" to be available from netflix. Until then...is "Little Fish" the movie with Cate Blanchette? Also, what's this "Picnic at Hanging Rock"? I keep seeing it on my tv guide but I never got around to watching it.
Thanx for all your suggestions.

reply

for starters, just like to state that it wasn't a 'dog', it was a dingo. it is infact the story of Azaria Chamberland, where the line 'a dingo stole my baby!' comes from. Probably the most famous death in Australias history... which is kinda pathetic really.
But anyways, moving on. The Propisition is FANTASTIC! Chopper, Muriels Wedding, Wolf Creek, Romper Stomper. Oh and of course there's the Aussie comedies. The Castle, Crocadile Dundee etc. Tragically I haven't seen as many Aussie films as I probably should have(being Aussie and all), but i find Australians are often portrayed extremely inaccurately, also... well, most Aussie films are crap... thank god we've got a few exceptions ^^^^
Also, I haven't seen Proof of Rabbit Proof Fence, though the latter has been on my 'must see' list. ~Rach~

Whatever! We don't have dingos in America so I don't know the difference. Sorry. The Castle was really cute & funny. Was that Eric Bana's first movie? He looks a million times hotter now. I guess boot camp agrees with him. Anyhoo, speaking of hot Aussies...I finally got around to seeing Romper Stomper and I must say that Russel Crowe officially scares the *beep* out of me.

P.S. You should watch Rabbit Proof Fence. That one stays with you for a while.

Thank goodness you mentioned 'The Castle', how could anyone forget that gem! I found the Crocadile Dundee movies cringeworthy. And sometimes you've got to have an Aussie sense of humour to understand some movies like 'Muriel's Wedding'

I finally changed it from 'Mark_AJ',

Great Australian movies seemingly not mentioned to date and all worth watching (recent, right back to 60's) 'Red Dog' (has American Josh Lucas in it, Heart-warming comedy-drama),'Last Cab To Darwin'(another heart-warming comedy drama where a dying man a cabbie wants to travel to Darwin to volunteer to be legally euthanised stars Michael Caton, the father from the Castle); 'The Dish' (Aussie comedy about the Parkes telescope's contribution to the Lunar Landing telecast), 'The Nugget'(Another comedy featuring Eric Bana), 'The Oyster Farmer' (a good first movie of Alex O'Loughlin now famous as Steve McGarrett in the remake of Hawaii Five-O), 'Candy' (dark tale of love and heroin addiction featuring the A-list cast of Heath Ledger, Abbie Cornish & Geoffrey Rush)

Then theres some older ones 'The Last of The Knucklemen', 'Gallipoli' (early Mel Gibson movie about WWI); 'Sunday Too Far Away' (Jack Thompson outback classic about the lives of hard drinking shearers), 'They're A Weird Mob' (a classic comedy about an Italian migrant trying to fit in with the local culture 'down under' in the 1960's),'The Sundowners' (a bit of a laugh watching Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr in a film made in Australian with pretty much Australian and English supporting cast and 'Smiley Gets A Gun'. Some of these may be a bit hard to get all the humour. "Wake In Fright" is rated a classic (and almost a changing of the guard from 1971 Chips Rafferty's last movie and Jack Thompson's first). A teacher in far outback Australia intends to head to the City for a break and gets stuck in a little dusty town and trapped in a cycle of boozing & gambling with some wild types.

Also honorable mentions to "The Club' (Jack Thompson comedy drama about an AFL club behind the scenes) and 'Don's Party'about a 1969 federal election night party in Australia and all the shennanigans they get up to drinking, carousing, chasing each others wives, and hoping in vain their beloved Labor party (akin to the Democrats in the US) can win after 20 years in opposition. Very funny to an Australian born before 1975, but alot of the humour mightn't translate, alot will. 'The Adventures of Barry McKenzie' is another dated ocker yobbo comedy about uncouth beer swilling, larrikans let loose in England in the early 70's. Alot of people don't like it anymore because it's dated politically incorrect and paints a picture that people no-longer see or want to be depicted as but believe me, they still exist. Wall to wall stereotypical great sayings, rhyming slang and one liners.

You're dead, son. Get yourself buried!
