most people feel that the film takes place in the 70s and it indeed may but it would be 1979 at the earliest. The reason I feel this way is because "Snotrag" was watching his favorite show "The Dukes Of Hazzard" which first started airing in 1979. any other hints that it might be in the early 80s?
The only reason I brought it up at all is because most people seem to think that it's set in the 70s and it may be that it is but if we go by the fact that the Dukes Of Hazzard made its debut in 1979 it makes that the only year of the 70s year that TSA could be set in.
If you watch the movie with the director's commentary audio selected, they explain a lot of the timeline issues. The movie was supposed to take place in the 70s. They explain how they were unable to get the licensing for the songs they originally wanted on the movie. As for Hankey watching Dukes of Hazzard... I think they say something about that and that it was just an oversight. In my opinion these things add character to a top notch B movie such as The Stoned Age. So I leave you with this, a quote that sums up the entire movie.
"You'd have to be a crazy hard up bastard to worm Crump's Brother's chicks."
The cops have an M-body Plymouth Gran Fury which wasn't made until model year 1982 and at the beginning there are multiple cars from the '80s and '90s that are visable...
Lanie is wearing the typical metal chick gear worn by girls around that time. I was in highschool in the early 1980s so I know my stuff. They wore that to concerts mostly because you couldn't get away with cutoff shorts in school.
The only reason Hubbs and Joe were driving a vintage volkswagen with an 8-track tape deck is because you only had cassette decks if you had some money. I drove a 1972 toyota and got my first cassette deck in 1980.
