The Nexus is Magic

Originally, the studio execs wanted to have both crews involved in the same story, preferably at the same time. The writers couldn't come up with a good idea for doing this (hard to believe for a series that was constantly jumping all over time).

Eventually, they settled for bringing just Kirk and Picard together, but needed a plot device to do it. And yeah, they settled on the Nexus. A little piece of space magic that allowed them to bring two characters together.

Hard to believe that this was the best Ronald Moore could come up with.

Haha!! Amazing!

They couldn't come up with a plausible story to bring both ships/crews together, so they settled on a bad story that was executed worse. What a way to improve a situation, huh?!

Still, it wouldn't have worked out anyway. There would've been no real satisfactory way to bring a decommission ship back, and gather an entire retired/scattered crew back together again. That alone would've been an implausible plot point before ever attempting to bring the two crews together.

And had they succeeded... "Hey, look! It's Scotty again! How ya been, Mr. Scott? Oh, that's right, you don't know us yet! But we know you! How? We'll fill you in in 77 years!"
