Why doesn't this get the respect it deserves?

Every time I see this film, I like it more. I think it's my favorite of the Trek movies, even including Khan (yes, I know that's blasphemy for some).

What I love about it is the concept of the Nexus, something magical that anyone can relate to. It's an idea based on our imaginations, in a world of sci fi movies about battles and violence. Kinda like the way "The Next Generation" (my favorite of the series) was based on ideas, characters and behavior, as opposed to who could beat up who.

I love all of it. Seeing Kirk, Scotty and Chekhov again, watching Kirk and Picard interact, Guinan ... all of it.

Too many plot holes. Why on Earth would Picard and Kirk return from the Nexus five minutes before the missile launches?

It is two days earlier. Picard steps out from the Nexus into Ten Forward, walks over to Soran and punches him in the face.

Picard: "Put him in the brig!"

Cut to shot of Scotty, Chekov and Harriman in the damaged Enterprise-B deck.

Chekov: "My god...vas anybody in here?"

Scotty: "Aye..."

Kirk steps out.

Kirk: "Hi guys.. How'd we do?"

Hmm ... it made sense to me, he wanted to physically stop Soran from launching the missile, along with help from another person. I do admit there are plenty of times in all the S.T. shows and movies where you have to suspend disbelief. But that's almost part of the fun, for me. It's an imaginative, scientific fantasy.

Every time travel story has a plot hole somewhere. And also as a Starfleet officer Picard would try and contaminate the time line as little as possible. With Kirk with him he believed that much time wouldn't be necessary.

ive seen all the original ST, TNG and DS9 and in my opinion every single episode of those 3 shows was better then this movie.

Whoa, for real? Even that silly Next Gen episode where Data is taken over by the god of an old civilization and talks like Pee Wee Herman? Or the original series episode where Kirk wrestles with a man in a lizard suit? ;o)

reply

well yeah okey, the original series is pretty bad xD

It is, isn't it? A lot of hokey stuff. Yet, the basic moral messages were good, and some of the humor was funny.

I'm glad there's more than one of us! I'm re-watching this movie a few times a week at bedtime (I use familiar movies to put me to sleep, like a favorite book), and really love it more all the time. The review IMDb puts on the title page is bugging me more & more ... "horrible-ness," really? A bad writer in addition to having some strange reactions to the film.

I just love the idea of the Nexus. I know we can all relate to a fantasy world where we get everything we would most wish for! And I think what Data goes thru with his emotion chip is often funny; nothing like Jar Jar Banks, for heaven's sake (as that reviewer compares him to).

Again, totally agree, that makes two of us. So why does this film get so much hate?? I just don't get it so must be missing something.

There's something special about trek films,
The different looks, aesthetics, ship design, the bigness of it all.
That feeling of getting the gang back together.
Ultimately though, many of the films are a bit flimsy.
They could have been even better.

reply

Because this movie does not deserve any respect.
End of story.
