Question about DVD

Hey eevryone. Was curious if anyone else who owns the dvd found this odd. This is the only dvd/blu ray/ or video on demand movie I have every viewed on my tv that is shown in square format. Not letterbox at top and bottom, but all four sides. I have a wide screen hd tv using hdmi. Was this movie shot in a rare format? I apologize if this an obvious issue that has been discussed previously, it just took me by shock because the only way i can enjoy it on my tv is if I use component cables, therefore it's presented in normal top and bottom letterbox.
