I know by now that its a cartoon show about a robot and Ortiz was a big guy but not really that huge....anyone know why jack referred to him as that???

This makes me laugh every time. Sure Ortiz wasn't "gigantic", but he was a bigger guy that kinda got to show how strong he was earlier in the movie. So yeah, I think Jack didn't know Ortiz's name and simply called him "Gigantor" because it seemed appropriate based on said person's appearance and show of strength (what other reason could there be?).

he never appeared taller than anyone else on the bus to me,thats why i was wondering a bit...cool guy and good character ,even saved the heros life.....very rare with ''minor'' characters and separates the movie from many others

Yes, but Ortiz was one of the more active minor characters in helping Jack, along with Stephens and the guy with the floppy hair.
Ortiz helped Jack from under the bus when he had tried to defuse the bomb and was active in helping Stephens off the bus.
In 1994 the 20-40 audience would have got the reference.
