'Speed' or 'True Lies'
I remember when both came out the same year and were massive action blockbusters. Which one did you like better?

shareI prefer Speed. Pure action, no distrating subplots, not as sexist, just a great cheapie action movie.

But were summer stealers, but Speed was something fresh and new. It was just so faced-paced all the way through, and so damn exciting.
True Lies remains a favorite to this day, but it's more a "normal" action film, whereas Speed changed the genre with its new formula.
@Robbmonster Yeah, I always have to skip that big chunk of True Lies with the Simon subplot until they get to Florida Keys. Speed is, as you say, pure.
shareIn 1994, Speed. Today, True Lies.

Definitely Speed.
shareIt is so funny and weird that someone is comparing these two because I just looked at a list on IGN.com called the 25 greatest action films and both of these were in it.
When I saw them I kinda soured because I have never really been a fan of True Lies and I used to love Speed but for me it has aged badly. I saw it about a year ago and I thought: eh this isn't as good as I remembered it.
I came on IMDb to kinda say my peace about each of them after I saw them on that list. So my answer is neither. I think both have their good parts and I actually do think they deserve to be on that list (or at least in the top 50 action movies) because they do have good action scenes but compared to the other movies on that list (Matrix, Die Hard, Aliens, T2, etc.) they don't hold a candle to the awesomness that is those other movies. Good action films?...maybe...but excellent by no means.

With the previous comment, I can totally see how True Lies hasn't aged well and is much better in the comedy area and scene-stealing performances. Plus, the action really isn't all that intense until the second half of the movie.
Despite not caring for Keanu or Bullock all that much, Speed would get my vote simply because as mostly everyone else has stated, it's just instantly rewatchable, is a great Die Hard clone, has a great soundtrack, has gorgeous cinematography, a great villain and one-liners galore.
speed, easily
shareI gotta check out that list. I've been lamenting the state of action movies these days and missing the greats of yesteryear. Speed & True Lies definitely come to mind in particular (I haven't seen them in a while either--been kinda saving myself for a True Lies bluray release). I actually love them both better than Die Hard, and you can't really compare them to the likes of The Matrix, T2 & Aliens. While I do love these films even more, they're SCI-FI action films. They have the advantage of higher/more fantastic themes & concepts, more elaborate special effects, and thus more exotic action sequences. But as far as PURE "real world" action movies go, Speed & True Lies are definitely at the top (imho). And they just don't make 'em like these anymore.
As far as the OP's question goes, that IS a tough one. I've always herald these two as both my most favorite action pics.
You should watch The Raid, Apocalypto, and Ip Man for great newer action films.
